Babygirl is a sexually frank drama about a senior executive’s affair with an intern, but its central tension is not simply whether the relationship is transgressive. It is whether Romy Mathis can acknowledge what she wants while confronting the authority she holds over Samuel. Nicole Kidman gives the film a commanding, deliberately contradictory center; the film is provocative and often uneasy, though its ideas about power and transformation land more sharply than its character development.
What is Babygirl about?
Written and directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl follows Romy Mathis (Nicole Kidman), a powerful executive who begins an affair with Samuel (Harris Dickinson), an intern at her company. Sophie Wilde and Antonio Banderas are also among the cast listed by A24.
The workplace hierarchy is not incidental scenery. Romy has institutional authority while pursuing a private relationship with someone below her at work, making secrecy, consent and professional consequences part of the story’s stakes. The film’s erotic charge therefore sits beside an uncomfortable question: how freely can the people involved negotiate desire when their positions are unequal?
Is Babygirl like May December?
The useful answer is that Babygirl is its own kind of uneasy relationship drama, not a direct equivalent to May December. Here the defining setup is an executive-intern affair and the way it complicates Romy’s public authority and private vulnerability. The film is best approached on those terms rather than as a one-to-one comparison.

How does the film handle sex, kink and power?
Babygirl is sexually explicit and engages with BDSM and kink. Reijn’s conversation with BFI’s Sight and Sound addresses the film’s approach to those elements, including the choice to take glamour away from kink. That framing matters: the film’s eroticism is bound up with discomfort, vulnerability and shifting control, rather than presented as uncomplicated wish-fulfillment.
Its most interesting tension is that Romy can be powerful in the boardroom and exposed in her private life, while still retaining workplace authority over Samuel. The film invites viewers to consider what she is seeking and what her position makes difficult to ignore. It does not make the hierarchy disappear just because desire is mutual or the relationship is secret.

Does Nicole Kidman’s performance carry the film?
Kidman makes Romy compelling by playing her as a person in conflict rather than a tidy symbol of liberation. The ABC News review calls the performance a “tour de force,” while questioning whether Romy’s evolution is fully realized. That reservation points to the film’s main limitation: the character’s contradiction is vivid, but the path through it can feel less developed than the premise promises.
Dickinson provides a strong counterweight in the central pairing. The film’s effect depends on the tension between the two performers as authority and control shift from scene to scene. The displayed Rotten Tomatoes consensus likewise praises the lead pairing and Reijn’s clinical gaze, while describing the film as provocative rather than merely prurient. Because that page aggregates reviews and can change, its consensus is a reception snapshot, not a fixed verdict.

What works—and what falls short?
What works
- Kidman’s fearless center: She makes Romy’s desire, shame and authority coexist without smoothing away the contradictions.
- An unsettled erotic tone: Reijn mixes sexual frankness with discomfort and dark humor instead of treating the affair as simple fantasy.
- A genuinely complicated power dynamic: The story’s workplace hierarchy gives the relationship stakes beyond private transgression.
What is less convincing
- Character development: Romy’s inner conflict is more vivid than the film’s account of how fully she changes.
- Unfulfilled provocation: The premise and style signal daring, but the film does not always push its ideas as far as they might go.
- Workplace authority remains a difficult knot: The film makes that imbalance visible, but its erotic frame does not by itself resolve the ethical questions it raises.
The Associated Press review describes the film as an erotic office drama with shifting gender and power dynamics, while judging it less daring than it appears to promise. The Los Angeles Times review similarly emphasizes how Romy’s seniority changes the meaning of the affair, especially in a post-#MeToo context. Those reservations are central to the film’s mixed effect: it opens provocative questions, even when its answers or character arcs feel incomplete.

Is Babygirl worth watching?
Yes, if you want an adult drama led by a daring Kidman performance and are interested in a story that makes sexual desire collide with workplace power. It is less satisfying if you expect its provocative setup to produce a fully developed account of Romy’s transformation or a decisive reckoning with the executive-intern imbalance. The film’s strength is its tension; its weakness is that it does not always deepen that tension into equally persuasive character development.
