The comparison is between reported worldwide grosses—not profit—and the figures show why “about four times” is more precise than “triples.”
Which Sam Worthington film is the comparison about?
The likely match is Terminator Salvation (2009). Worthington is among the film’s credited actors, and it is part of the Terminator franchise. That connection does not make the franchise Worthington’s, however, and a cast credit alone does not establish that the film or franchise “failed.”
The Terminator franchise box-office table from The Numbers lists the film’s reported theatrical grosses. Worthington’s role is also identified on the official Avatar: Fire and Ash film page; the page is relevant to his Avatar role, while the franchise-table listing identifies Salvation as the likely comparator.
How the worldwide grosses compare
The Numbers lists these worldwide and domestic grosses in figures accessed in 2026:

| Film | Worldwide gross | Domestic gross |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar: Fire and Ash | $1,490,386,712 | $404,340,010 |
| Terminator Salvation | $365,491,792 | $125,322,469 |
Dividing the listed worldwide totals gives a ratio of about 4.08 to 1. Put another way, Fire and Ash grossed roughly $1.125 billion more worldwide. These are reported box-office grosses, not studio earnings or profit. The Numbers’ totals can be revised; its Fire and Ash box-office listing and Terminator Salvation listing provide the underlying figures.
Release and opening-week context
Avatar: Fire and Ash opened theatrically on December 19, 2025, according to its official film page. The later worldwide total should not be confused with its opening: the Associated Press reported an estimated $345 million global opening for Fire and Ash in December 2025. For context, AP reported a $435 million worldwide opening for Avatar: The Way of Water. Those are opening figures, not final-run totals, and the estimate for Fire and Ash is not directly comparable to the final grosses above. AP’s December 21, 2025 box-office report gives the opening-week figures.

Disney announced in January 2026 that Fire and Ash had crossed $1 billion worldwide and that the three Avatar films combined had exceeded $6.35 billion worldwide. That studio milestone is consistent with a major theatrical run, but it is distinct from the more specific total listed by The Numbers. Disney’s announcement reports the milestone and combined franchise figure.

The ratio answers a narrow question: how the two films’ reported worldwide gross totals compare in nominal dollars. It does not establish which film was more profitable, because gross receipts do not reveal production and marketing costs or how theatrical revenue was divided among studios, exhibitors, and other parties.

It also is not an inflation-adjusted comparison. Ticket prices, release patterns, and the number of markets and screens can change over time, so a nominal gross does not measure audience size on equal terms across releases. The available totals support saying Fire and Ash grossed about four times as much worldwide; they do not, on their own, prove that Terminator Salvation was a financial failure.
