Its focus gives the series emotional force, but it also leaves the NFL and the wider football system less examined than the title of its source material might lead viewers to expect. The result is compelling as a portrait of a person and his orbit, less searching as an account of the institutions around him.
What kind of series is American Sports Story?
FX describes American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez as the first installment in an anthology and a 10-episode limited series tracing Hernandez’s rise and fall, identity, family, career, death and legacy. It is a scripted dramatization, not a documentary. Its starting point is Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc., the podcast from The Boston Globe and Wondery, which FX links on the official series page.
That distinction matters: scenes and interpretations belong to the drama, while the series’ reporting basis does not make every staged exchange a verified record. The show stars Josh Andrés Rivera as Hernandez. The Associated Press identifies Hernandez as a former New England Patriots tight end who was found guilty of murdering a friend and sentenced to life in prison; those convictions should not be blurred with other accusations in accounts of his life.
Why the personal story takes precedence
The series’ center of gravity is Hernandez and the people close to him, rather than a systematic account of professional football. In the Los Angeles Times, creator Stuart Zicherman described the approach as “character first and football second,” pointing to Hernandez, his family, teammates and coaches as the story’s distinguishing focus.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That choice gives the drama room to explore family pressures and Hernandez’s sexuality, subjects also highlighted in the Guardian’s review. The Guardian reads the series as a tragedy, while TheWrap’s review notes its treatment of sexuality and head injuries and cautions that the dramatization takes liberties. These are critical readings of a scripted work, not proof of private motives or a complete account of events.
The producers’ stated aim is not simple absolution. Zicherman told the Los Angeles Times he wanted to tell the story “without forgiving him for what he did.” Brad Simpson told the AP the team wanted to move beyond a tabloid headline and consider what it was like to walk in the shoes of the people involved. Those intentions help explain the show’s emphasis on human complexity, but intention alone does not answer whether it scrutinizes football’s institutions.

Does it go easy on the NFL?
As a judgment about emphasis, the criticism has merit. The series gives the viewer more access to Hernandez’s personal world than to the NFL as an institution: how football shaped his career, what the sport’s power structures demanded of players, and how those structures might bear on the life being dramatized. Football is essential to the story, but the drama’s declared character-first approach keeps its institutional lens comparatively narrow.
That is not the same as saying the show absolves the NFL or establishes that the league caused Hernandez’s actions. The available critical coverage supports a discussion of the series’ tragic, personal framing; it does not supply an episode-by-episode institutional audit. The more precise verdict is that the drama foregrounds an individual life and its relationships, while offering less sustained examination of the systems around professional football than a series titled Football Inc. might suggest.

What the series says—and does not say—about CTE
The AP reports that research after Hernandez’s death found evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in his brain. That postmortem finding is relevant context for a story about football and head injuries. It does not, by itself, establish that CTE caused any particular action, and the cited reporting does not establish that causal claim. Viewers should distinguish a medical finding from a definitive explanation of behavior.
