“I don’t believe in holding grudges, but if you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe.”

That is Selleck’s view of the series’ performance and value to the network; it should not be read as CBS’s stated reasoning for ending it.

Selleck said he would need time to process the end. He recalled expecting to prepare dialogue for a Monday shoot after the final weekend, then realizing there would be no Monday call. His account gives a personal sense of the transition from a long-running production to its final episode.
