‘Alien: Romulus’ Review: A Worthy Sci-Fi Sequel That Makes Space Scary Again

Alien: Romulus delivers tense, tactile space horror and a fresh survival story, but its devotion to franchise callbacks sometimes undercuts its originality.

Alien: Romulus is a horror-forward return to the franchise’s core fear: people trapped in an unforgiving place with a lethal organism they cannot control. Fede Álvarez gives the film tactile creature work and effective stretches of suspense, though its frequent callbacks sometimes make the new story feel more indebted to its predecessors than distinct from them.

Does Alien: Romulus make space scary again?

Mostly, yes. The film’s strongest source of dread is not a grand space opera or a new layer of franchise mythology, but the simple vulnerability of a small group in a confined, failing environment. A scavenging mission aboard a derelict station steadily turns into a fight to stay alive. Narrow spaces, mechanical hazards and the threat of a creature nearby give the setting a physical menace.

That approach matches Álvarez’s stated intention. In an Associated Press interview published April 25, 2024, the director called the film “a return to form” and said that “at its core, at its heart, it’s a horror thriller.” The result is more interested in suspense and survival than in expanding the series’ mythology for its own sake.

Suspense and intensity

The film’s danger feels immediate because the characters have little room to maneuver. Its R rating is a useful indication that this is not family-oriented science fiction, but the rating alone does not describe every viewer’s tolerance for horror. Disney+ also notes that some scenes contain flashing lights that may affect photosensitive viewers; the platform does not provide a detailed trigger list in that notice.

Alien: Romulus - Blu-ray + Digital
  • This truly terrifying sci-fi horror-thriller takes the legendary ?Alien? franchise back to its iconic roots. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young colonizers come face-to-face with the deadliest life form in the universe. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.

What works in the creature effects and production?

Romulus combines practical effects, animatronics and miniatures with contemporary computer-generated imagery. Álvarez told Disney D23, “We needed to make the film the way those first films were made,” describing the production as using “practical effects, animatronics, [and] miniatures for the spaceships” alongside modern CG. That mix gives the film a convincing physical texture: its machinery, corridors and creature encounters feel rooted in a material environment rather than existing only as digital spectacle.

The distinction matters most when the setting itself becomes part of the danger. A threat that damages the environment is more unnerving when the audience can feel the weight of the space around it. Álvarez told the Associated Press that alien blood melting a set was difficult to realize digitally, saying, “It’s not an easy CG thing to create,” and, “It’s like it has to be practical.” The AP story notes that creature-effects expert Alec Gillis helped with the effect.

These production details do not mean every shot is practical, nor do they establish which individual effects are digital. The more useful judgment is what appears onscreen: the combination generally makes the station feel tangible and the encounters more immediate.

Does the sequel feel fresh, or too familiar?

Its central tension is inheritance versus invention. Romulus is set around the period of Alien and Aliens, and it is a new story connected to those films, not an independent reboot. The young characters are trying to escape the limits of life on a mining colony, as Álvarez described to the Associated Press. That gives the premise a grounded reason to send them into danger.

Alien: Romulus - 4K + Blu-ray + Digital

Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.

The callbacks can make the film feel connected to the franchise’s strongest ideas, but they also expose its dependence on them. When familiar elements build anticipation or sharpen a moment of danger, they serve the story. When recognition becomes the point, suspense gives way to a sense of obligation: the film seems to be checking off what an Alien entry is expected to contain.

The critical response reflects that mixed balance rather than uncomplicated acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed consensus praises the film’s regard for its predecessors while recognizing new frights, and its page also shows a review excerpt arguing that it works hard—perhaps too hard—to recreate earlier franchise peaks. Those summaries and excerpts can change over time, so they are best understood as a snapshot of the page, not a permanent or unanimous verdict.

Where does it fit in the franchise, and do you need the earlier films?

Alien: Romulus takes place around the era of Alien and Aliens, but the available description does not establish a more precise timeline. It works as a new survival-horror story with connections to the earlier films. Watching them first can make the callbacks more rewarding; the basic premise—a group on a derelict station facing a deadly life form—is understandable without a franchise refresher.

Is Alien: Romulus worth watching?

It is a strong choice for viewers who want a tense, horror-led chapter of the series and appreciate physical-feeling creature work. Its best stretches make the station feel dangerous and its inhabitants vulnerable. The main reservation is that some of its franchise echoes feel less like fresh suspense than a reminder of films that did this kind of thing first.

That trade-off keeps it from feeling wholly new, but does not erase what it does well. Álvarez’s focus on confined-space horror gives Romulus a clear identity, even as the film leans heavily on the series’ past.

Where can you watch it?

At the time of the cited official listings, Disney+ had a title page for Alien: Romulus, and 20th Century Studios’ catalog listed it on Blu-ray, DVD and digital. Streaming rights and availability can vary by country and change over time. The studio’s catalog supports the phrase “Alien: Romulus Blu-ray,” but does not establish a particular 4K UHD edition, retailer, price or stock status.

For formal identification, 20th Century Studios lists the film’s U.S. theatrical release as August 16, 2024, an R rating and a runtime of 1 hour 59 minutes. Disney+ displays a runtime of 1 hour 58 minutes; that small platform listing discrepancy is not material to the review.
