How did Benji Gregory die?
Gregory died on June 13, 2024, in Peoria, Arizona. He was 46. The Los Angeles Times reported that he was found dead in a vehicle alongside his service dog. When the newspaper reported his death on July 11, the official cause was still pending.
On September 13, AZFamily reported that the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner determined the cause was “heat exposure in the setting of hepatic cirrhosis” and classified the death as accidental. This is the later medical examiner finding; early descriptions of suspected vehicular heatstroke were not the final determination.

Why did early reports say the cause was pending?
The reports reflect different points in time. The Los Angeles Times said the official cause had not yet been established when Gregory’s death was first reported in July. AZFamily later reported the medical examiner’s determination in September. The later finding resolves that chronology; it should not be confused with family speculation or an initial suspected cause.
