In “Hard Salt Beef,” Dunk’s effort to enter the Ashford tournament advances from appeals to a direct approach to Prince Baelor—but in small steps. The episode spends much of its time on Dunk and Egg’s characters, the memory of Ser Arlan, and the uneasy gap between a knight’s title and his conduct. That gives it thematic weight, though the final turn may feel too modest to supply the momentum its tournament story needs.
What happens in “Hard Salt Beef”?
Season 1, episode 2 follows Dunk as he tries to secure a place in the Ashford tournament. He looks to people with status for help, including Leo “Longthorn” Tyrell. When Leo says he did not know Ser Arlan, Dunk’s assumption that his mentor’s reputation will open doors meets a blunt obstacle. The episode’s Rotten Tomatoes synopsis identifies the next opening: the Targaryens arrive at Ashford, and Dunk approaches Prince Baelor.
Egg counsels Dunk not to give up his pride while making his case. The advice sharpens a central tension: Dunk needs recognition from the social order, but Egg reminds him that he is already a knight. The episode aired January 25, 2026, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing.
Does episode 2 move the story forward?
Yes, but incrementally. Dunk’s attempts to gain tournament entry lead to the arrival of the Targaryens and his approach to Baelor, so the plot does not stand still. The question is whether that progress feels substantial enough. The episode’s last beat points toward a consequential conversation rather than delivering a decisive change in Dunk’s prospects; viewers looking for a faster tournament storyline may find the hook slight.

That is a judgment about pacing, not a claim that nothing happens. The episode’s momentum comes as much from watching Dunk negotiate his place in the world as from the mechanics of getting into the tournament.
What the episode is saying about knighthood
Dunk’s appeals and recollections of Arlan put knighthood under scrutiny. Is it a reputation that can be inherited through association, a rank bestowed by others, or a standard measured by behavior? Leo’s lack of familiarity with Arlan shows how little a mentor’s name may count among the powerful. Egg’s reminder that Dunk is a knight offers a different measure: the title should mean something even when others refuse to recognize it.

The Ringer frames the story through honor, class, chivalry, and the distance between a knight’s title and conduct. Its analysis also reproduces George R. R. Martin’s reflection on knighthood: “The ideals of knighthood embody some of the finest ideals the human race has ever come up with.” That is Martin speaking in a 2000 interview, as quoted by The Ringer, not a line from the episode.
Earthy comedy, affection, and the memory of Arlan
The episode’s rough humor sits alongside a more tender portrait of Dunk’s attachment to his mentor. A.V. Club reads Dunk’s account of Arlan as balancing affection with the absurdity of his memories. That mix gives the episode a register beyond its tournament-entry problem: Dunk can be funny, awkward, and sincerely moved by the man who shaped him.

Ashford’s celebration and tug-of-war also place Dunk and Egg together in the same social world. In a TV Insider interview, the actors recalled Dunk throwing Egg into the air after their team won and said the take featuring an accidental collision was used. That detail is a cast recollection of the scene, rather than an independently verified production account.
Why critics differ on the episode’s pace
A.V. Club emphasizes the balance between irreverence and pathos, while The Ringer stresses the story’s moral and social contradictions. Those readings help explain why the same episode can feel rich in character and theme yet modest in plot propulsion. One critic may value the pauses that deepen Dunk’s relationship with Arlan; another may want the tournament-entry question to turn more decisively.
