Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 3, “The Squire.” Dunk’s first clash with Prince Aerion ends with Egg revealing that he is Prince Aegon Targaryen—Aerion’s brother and one of Maekar’s missing sons. Before that confrontation, the episode tests Dunk’s honor, shows how dangerous Aerion can be, and puts Dunk into the tournament’s action in a way he never planned.
What happens in “The Squire”?
In Season 1, Episode 3, Dunk and Egg spend the tournament’s first full day at Ashford. The official episode synopsis sets up the day’s central pressure: Dunk receives a proposition that could secure his future. The episode’s title also points to its biggest reveal: the squire’s true identity.
Egg proves himself as Dunk’s squire
While tending the horses, Egg encounters Ser Robyn Rhysling, whom he recognizes. Egg speaks proudly of serving Ser Duncan the Tall. Dunk, meanwhile, sees that his gruffness has affected the boy and tries to make amends by teaching him to sew. Their brief lesson gives the pair a quieter moment before the tournament’s dangers take over.
Dunk is kept out of the lists—and offered a shortcut
Dunk believes he is ready to joust, but Egg explains that knights of high birth and renown have the right of first challenge. Dunk will not get his turn that day. The two watch the tournament and talk about the futures they hope to have.

Master of Games Plummer offers Dunk a way to gain valuable equipment: in a fixed joust, Dunk could let his opponent fall and claim the man’s horse, arms, and armor. Dunk refuses because he does not want a victory he has not earned. It is a practical temptation—he needs resources—but he will not trade his idea of honor for them.
Aerion’s joust foreshadows the violence to come
During the tournament, Aerion targets Ser Humfrey Hardyng’s horse, which falls onto its rider. Egg believes Aerion did it deliberately. The incident makes the danger of Aerion’s conduct visible well before his confrontation with Dunk.

Why does Dunk attack Aerion?
Dunk and Egg later encounter a fortune teller who predicts that Egg will become king and die in fire. Dunk laughs off the prediction; within this episode, it serves as ominous foreshadowing rather than a resolved event.
At Tanselle’s puppet show, Aerion takes offense at a performance depicting a dragon’s death and injures Tanselle. Dunk responds by attacking Aerion. The guards overwhelm Dunk, and Aerion orders them to break his teeth. Dunk’s intervention is instinctive: actor Peter Claffey has said Dunk acts from his values when Tanselle is hurt, not because he is consciously trying to teach Egg a lesson.

Who is Egg really?
Egg is Prince Aegon Targaryen, the youngest son of Prince Maekar and the brother of Aerion. As the guards move to carry out Aerion’s order, Egg calls them by name and commands them to stop. He then identifies Aerion as his brother and explains that he cut his hair because he did not want to look like him. Dunk realizes that the boy he has treated as a common squire is one of Maekar’s missing sons.
Egg does not reveal his identity to impress anyone. Actor Dexter Sol Ansell has said Egg does not really want to disclose who he is, but does so because Dunk is in danger. The reveal gives Egg immediate authority over the guards and forces Dunk to see their companionship differently: his squire is also a Targaryen prince.

Why does Egg reveal himself at the end?
Egg reveals his identity because Aerion’s men are about to carry out a potentially crippling punishment against Dunk, and his royal status is the power he can use to stop them. The moment is both a rescue and a turning point in their relationship: Dunk has protected Egg without knowing who he is, and Egg now intervenes for Dunk by stepping into the identity he had hidden.
Showrunner Ira Parker told TheWrap that Egg’s secret can be more than a plot twist: “Ryan Condal pointed out to me pretty early on that [Egg’s secret] is not a plot point, it’s a character attribute, and that it could come out earlier.” The timing lets viewers who already know Egg’s identity watch for when Dunk will learn it, while preserving the surprise for viewers encountering the reveal here.

What the ending changes
The episode begins with a knight-and-squire arrangement that looks straightforward: Dunk is the master, Egg the boy who tends his horses and learns from him. The ending adds a sharp imbalance and a new risk. Egg’s lineage can protect Dunk in the moment, but it also means their bond sits within the politics and expectations surrounding a royal family.
“The Squire” closes on Dunk’s realization rather than on a tournament victory. He has finally been pulled into the action, but not through a joust: he acts when Aerion harms Tanselle, and the consequences bring Egg’s secret into the open.
Where the story comes from
The series adapts George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg stories. The collected A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms contains the three official prequel novellas, according to Penguin Random House. Viewers who already know the story may anticipate Egg’s identity; the episode’s suspense is then less about what the secret is and more about when Dunk will discover it.
