A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts George R. R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, but a successful screen adaptation need not reproduce every detail literally. Its more useful test is whether changes serve the story’s emotional center: the unlikely bond between Dunk and Egg, and their journey through Westeros.
What is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapting?
The series is based on The Hedge Knight, the first Dunk and Egg novella, rather than one of the mainline A Song of Ice and Fire novels. HBO describes it as an original half-hour drama about Dunk and Egg, unlikely companions traveling through Westeros roughly a century before Game of Thrones. The series debuted January 18, 2026, according to the HBO / Warner Bros. Discovery announcement.
That premise gives the adaptation a different center of gravity from a sprawling dynastic saga. Dunk and Egg’s relationship is the immediate story; the larger history of Westeros is context around it. The question is not simply whether television preserves every sentence, but whether its changes keep that relationship and the story’s concerns in focus.
What changed from the novella?
Available comparisons identify at least two kinds of adaptation choices: added historical context and a character change. These examples are not a complete page-by-page or episode-by-episode accounting.

More context about the Blackfyre Rebellion
A season-one review from Westeros.org discusses the show’s inclusion of Blackfyre Rebellion context, material that broadens the political history surrounding the immediate story. That added history may help viewers understand the world and its tensions without having read the novella. It can also draw attention away from Dunk and Egg if the exposition becomes more compelling than their journey. Whether it clarifies or distracts depends on how a viewer responds to the balance; one critic’s account does not establish that every addition succeeds.
Rafe is a reported character change
Popverse’s comparison reports that Rafe is male in Martin’s original text and female in the television adaptation. That is a concrete difference, but it should not be mistaken for an exhaustive list or a verdict on the character’s importance. A change in a character’s presentation can be part of translating a work for a different medium; its value depends on what it contributes to the drama, not on change alone.

Why not follow the book word for word?
A novella and a television series tell stories with different tools. Prose can explain a character’s thoughts directly and move quickly through background; a screen story must convey information through performance, dialogue, visual detail, and the amount of time available in an episode. Carrying every detail over literally could make the result feel like an illustrated reading rather than a drama shaped for television.
Adaptation is therefore a translation, not a transcription. It can expand history to make the setting legible, alter a character detail, or redistribute emphasis. Those choices are not automatically improvements: added context can clutter a focused story, while a changed detail can feel arbitrary if it does not serve the characters or themes. The useful standard is whether the adaptation’s choices help the screen version make its own coherent case while preserving what makes the source worth adapting.

Character and relationship
The official synopsis foregrounds Dunk and Egg as unlikely companions. That is the strongest available measure of the series’ fidelity: does the adaptation keep their connection at the heart of the journey? The evidence here establishes the premise, but does not support a scene-by-scene judgment about how every episode develops their dynamic.
Context and characterization
The reported Blackfyre material and Rafe change show that the series does not simply reproduce the source unchanged. Each can be assessed by asking what it does for the story on screen. Historical context is useful when it sharpens the stakes of Dunk and Egg’s immediate experience; characterization changes are useful when they make a dramatic choice rather than functioning as decoration. The existence of a change, by itself, proves neither success nor failure.

Does the show’s smaller scale work?
Critical response differs on the series’ scale and pacing. RogerEbert.com praises its small-scale focus, while TV Guide criticizes its scale and pacing. These are contrasting critical judgments, not evidence of a consensus among critics or viewers.
That disagreement points to a genuine adaptation trade-off. A story centered on two travelers can feel refreshingly intimate beside the vast political machinery of Game of Thrones; viewers expecting the same breadth and momentum may find it slight. The smaller focus is not inherently a flaw or a virtue. It works when the characters’ journey supplies enough dramatic weight, and it disappoints when a viewer wants a wider, faster-moving saga.

Should you read The Hedge Knight first?
No. The official premise is clear enough to approach the series as a story about Dunk and Egg without treating the novella as homework. Reading the source first is worthwhile if you want to spot differences for yourself, especially because the reported comparisons cover only some changes. The Hedge Knight is available in a Dunk and Egg collection; check the edition you want before buying, since formats and contents can vary.
For viewers who know the novella, the adaptation is most interesting as a set of choices rather than a fidelity scorecard. The added historical backdrop and reported character difference offer starting points for comparison, but they do not establish how comprehensively the series follows or departs from the book.
