For a 1990s movie night, start with the child’s comfort with peril and emotional intensity—not the rating alone. Toy Story and Kiki’s Delivery Service are gentler starting points for many younger viewers; Jumanji is better suited to older tweens who enjoy sustained danger. These are practical starting points, not guarantees: check the film’s specific content guidance and consider your family’s boundaries.

Gentler picks for younger children

These films have age recommendations of 5+ in Common Sense Media’s 1990s list, but even familiar family films contain moments some children may find unsettling.

  • Toy Story (1995, G, 81 minutes; age 5+): A lively choice for friendship, teamwork, and comic adventure. The tension includes toy peril, a threatening dog, and mutant-looking toys; there are also mild insults and a brief beer-can image. Common Sense Media notes that the central toy ensemble is overwhelmingly male. Its full review offers more detailed content categories.
  • Kiki’s Delivery Service (1990, G, 105 minutes; age 5+): A gentler fantasy and coming-of-age option. Read the full review if you want to check specific family concerns.
  • The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992, G, 120 minutes; age 5+): Common Sense Media describes it as a gentle take on Dickens. It is a seasonal pick, but its two-hour runtime may be a long sit for younger children.
  • Mulan (1998, G, 90 minutes; age 5+): A musical animated adventure. Common Sense Media calls it a “Disneyfied but dignified tale of Chinese warrior”; parents may also want to consider the film’s representation alongside its entertainment value.
  • A Bug’s Life (1998, G, 95 minutes; age 5+): An animated adventure, though mild peril and scary bugs may bother children who are sensitive to either.

Choices for older kids and mixed-age families

  • A Goofy Movie (1995, G, 78 minutes; age 6+): A road-trip comedy built around a father and son trying to understand each other. Common Sense Media says tweens will enjoy it. Expect chaotic peril, mild language, and a brief beer gag. See the full review for further detail.
  • The Lion King (1994, G, 89 minutes; age 6+): A recognizable musical, but not an automatically gentle choice: the shortlist describes it as powerful and scary. Consider a child’s response to loss, threats, and frightening scenes.
  • The Iron Giant (1999, PG, 86 minutes; age 6+): A touching story of a child’s friendship with a robot, with strong messages. The brief list entry is not a full sensitivity guide; check the title review before choosing it for a sensitive viewer.
  • A Little Princess (1995, G, 97 minutes; age 7+): A more emotional book adaptation. Its list entry flags scary moments, so review the title guidance if those may be an issue.
  • Jumanji (1995, PG, 104 minutes; age 10+): A fit for older tweens who like fantasy adventure with sustained peril. Common Sense Media calls it charming but grim and notes hostile animals, attacks, and an undercurrent of danger and morbidity. The US PG label by itself does not describe that intensity; consult the full review.

For teens: choose by interest and check the content

A movie marketed around teenagers is not necessarily a good fit for a younger sibling watching along. Common Sense Media’s 1990s list spans children’s films and titles intended for older kids, so choose teen viewing by the interests involved—such as animation, sports, adventure, or coming-of-age stories—and check each film’s own guidance rather than assuming all teen films are suitable for the same audience.

For example, Common Sense Media rates She’s All That (1999) PG-13, recommends it for age 14+, and flags sexual references. That makes it an older-teen possibility to consider against your family’s boundaries, not a default whole-family pick. See its full review.

How to make the call

  1. Start with the child, not the certificate. Think about how they handle threats, frightening images, loss, and sustained tension.
  2. Read title-specific guidance. Compare the age recommendation with content notes for peril, language, or other sensitivities. The Common Sense Media list, last updated June 5, 2026, combines age recommendations, US ratings, runtimes, and short editorial notes; individual reviews can add detail.
  3. Check the rating system where you live. A rating label and an age-based editorial recommendation are different kinds of guidance. The BBFC says, “A PG should generally not unsettle a child aged around eight, although parents and caregivers should be aware that some scenes may be unsuitable for more sensitive children.” It also advises checking content advice before deciding for a child. See BBFC’s age-ratings guidance.
  4. Match the film to the night. A child who wants a light story may do better with a gentler fantasy than with an adventure built around danger; runtime can also matter when younger viewers are joining.

BBC family-viewing research describes differences in how parents approach viewing for younger school-age children and secondary-school-age children, while noting that practices vary and that parents may misunderstand how certificates relate to content. It is older research, not a current measure of family habits; its useful reminder is that a certificate cannot replace a film-specific check. See the BBC account.
