Spoilers for Seasons 4 and 5 of 9-1-1: Lone Star, including Season 5, Episode 9, “Fall From Grace.” Chief Bridges killed Texas Ranger Gabriel Reyes and framed Ranger Sam Campbell. The reveal resolves the case that has haunted Gabriel’s son, Carlos, since the Season 4 finale—and turns the investigation into a painful betrayal by someone Carlos trusted.
Who killed Gabriel Reyes?
Chief Bridges was responsible for Gabriel’s murder. He also engineered the case against Carlos’s partner, Ranger Sam Campbell, making Campbell appear to be the killer. In the Season 5, Episode 9 confrontation, “Fall From Grace,” Campbell saves Carlos, and Bridges dies in the standoff. The central mystery is resolved in that episode.
How the investigation unfolded
Season 4: Carlos is left without an answer
Gabriel, Carlos’s father and a Texas Ranger, is murdered at home in the days before Carlos and TK’s wedding. Carlos takes on the investigation and discovers that Gabriel had been looking into corruption involving Texas Rangers and the Austin Police Department. As Carlos follows a lead, grief and anger bring him close to a decision that could end his career. By the Season 4 finale, he still does not know who killed his father.
Season 5: suspicion falls on Campbell
The investigation continues into Season 5, with Campbell under suspicion. Bridges, a senior figure Carlos has come to trust after Gabriel’s death, is the person who has actually framed Campbell and killed Gabriel. Raisani later noted that Bridges’ appearances at inconvenient moments take on a different meaning once the audience knows the truth.

Episode 9: the case and confrontation converge
In “Fall From Grace,” Campbell rescues Carlos during the final confrontation with Bridges. Bridges dies, Campbell is exposed as the framed partner rather than Gabriel’s killer, and Carlos survives. The answer closes the murder case while forcing Carlos to confront the fact that someone who had become important to him betrayed him.
Why did the show make Bridges the killer?
Co-showrunner Rashad Raisani told TV Insider that the decision went back to Season 4. The creative team wanted to give Alan Autry, who plays Bridges, more substantial material, and the choice made the reveal emotionally sharper because Carlos trusted Bridges after losing Gabriel. Raisani put the casting opportunity plainly: “We realized quickly that Alan Autry was gold, and so we really wanted to give him as much interesting stuff as possible.”

Raisani also said he had researched corruption involving law-enforcement officials and cartel attorneys as the team developed the fictional corruption in the story. That background informed the show’s plot; it is not evidence that the particular scheme depicted is a documented real case.
What the reveal changes for Carlos
Gabriel’s murder is not just a procedural puzzle for Carlos: it reshapes his life. In a TheWrap interview about the Season 4 finale, actor Rafael L. Silva described the impact: “I think his life is forever changed, because now Carlos is living in a new reality — a reality where his father was murdered.” Once Bridges is unmasked, Carlos has an answer, but the answer carries its own loss: his father was killed by someone Carlos had relied on.
Rank #3
Raisani described the resolution as a point where Carlos can begin becoming a fuller person again after being confined by grief. The show frames the case’s closure as a step in that process, not as a return to the life Carlos had before Gabriel’s murder.

The reveal comes in Season 5, Episode 9, “Fall From Grace,” not in the Season 4 finale. A February 2025 TV Guide interview looks back on the reveal as part of the completed final season. 9-1-1: Lone Star is no longer an ongoing cliffhanger: the series concluded in 2025.
