In 9-1-1 season 8, episode 6, “Confessions,” Maddie tells Chimney she is pregnant with their second child. Showrunner Tim Minear said Jennifer Love Hewitt asked him to add a boundary to their conversation: Chimney should not treat Maddie as broken or assume she will run away.
Which episode reveals Maddie’s pregnancy?
The reveal comes in “Confessions,” the sixth episode of season 8. Maddie and Chimney are expecting their second child, and the news opens a conversation shaped by the couple’s earlier experience with Maddie’s postpartum depression.
Minear told Yahoo Entertainment in an interview published November 8, 2024 that he wanted the new reveal to feel different from the earlier pregnancy announcement, which used a home pregnancy test. The conversation also lets the story acknowledge the fears attached to Maddie’s previous postpartum experience without declaring that history will repeat itself.
What did Jennifer Love Hewitt ask to change?
Chimney suggests rules for how they will handle the pregnancy: Maddie should tell him if she feels sad or overwhelmed rather than face those feelings alone. Hewitt proposed that Maddie should have a rule for him, too. As Minear recalled her suggested wording: “I just think he can’t treat me like I did a bad thing or that I’m broken.”
#1 Best Overall
The note changes the balance of the exchange. Chimney’s concern reflects what they have been through, but Maddie is not presented as someone whose past makes her incapable or certain to leave. Her request gives her a say in how they approach the possibility of difficult feelings.
Minear praised the addition, calling it a “great note, perfect note” that he thought would help the story going forward. The quoted wording is Minear’s account of what Hewitt suggested in their interview, not a separately published direct interview with Hewitt.

The previous postpartum storyline was part of a broader history that included Maddie’s experience of domestic abuse and trauma. In a Television Academy interview published September 24, 2024, Hewitt discussed that complexity and the timing of filming: she began working on the storyline while pregnant with her son, and she was in her own postpartum period during production of the later “Boston” episode.
That production context is Hewitt’s personal account; Maddie’s story is fictional. The new scene draws on the character’s past while leaving room for a different experience this time, rather than treating postpartum depression as a predictable outcome of pregnancy.
