“Secrets,” the January 2026 midseason return of 9-1-1, makes a promising case for refocusing Season 9 on the people behind the emergency calls. Hen’s private health crisis supplies the hour’s serious tension, while Buck and Ravi’s attempt to get Eddie dating again turns into an unexpectedly funny complication for Buck. The balance feels closer to the show’s character-and-crisis strengths, though Hen’s story leaves the episode with a sharper edge than a simple reset.
What is “Secrets” about?
ABC identifies “Secrets” as Season 9, Episode 7, with a listed runtime of 42 minutes and 42 seconds. Its official synopsis centers on Buck and Ravi deciding Eddie needs a night out. The episode also follows Hen as she tries to manage a health problem without telling her family or the 118. ABC’s episode guide lists January 9, 2026; Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page gives January 8. Those are the dates shown by the respective listings.
The episode arrives after ABC’s guide places the first six episodes in October and November 2025, followed by this January installment. That sequence supports calling it a midseason return, without establishing why the schedule paused.
Does the episode put the characters back at the center?
Yes, and that is the strongest reason to view “Secrets” as a promising reset. The show’s emergency-call format still matters, but the episode’s most consequential stakes come from what its characters conceal, misunderstand, and want from one another. TV Insider’s recap calls the mix of unusual calls and character stories “a return to form.” That is one critic’s assessment, not evidence of a wider audience consensus.
#1 Best Overall
Hen’s secret carries the most weight
TV Insider reports that Hen is experiencing a hand tremor and fainting, but has not told her wife, Karen, Chimney, or the rest of the 118. She has instead been visiting a medical spa weekly for three months and trying treatments without knowing what is causing her symptoms. These details are part of the fictional plot, not guidance about real symptoms or treatment.
Her secrecy creates a more urgent conflict than a simple withheld-confession twist: the people around Hen cannot respond to a problem they do not know exists. TV Insider says the truth emerges in a damaging confrontation involving Hen and Chimney. The episode makes the relational cost legible, even as the unresolved health problem keeps the tension alive beyond the hour.

Buck’s dating detour supplies the levity
Buck and Ravi set out to nudge Eddie back toward dating, but the plan leads Buck to Jade and Zane instead. According to TV Insider, Buck dates both before learning they are married and practice ethical non-monogamy; they invite him to join them as a third partner. Buck declines because he is still working out how to be part of a couple, though their invitation remains open. TVLine also identifies Buck’s unexpected romantic complication as a major plot point.
The reversal gives the episode an easy source of ensemble comedy: the friends trying to solve Eddie’s love life wind up facing a surprise in Buck’s. It also lets the story distinguish Jade and Zane’s consensual arrangement from the assumptions Buck initially makes about them. The plot’s humor works best as character-based awkwardness, rather than as a judgment on their relationship.

Is it a convincing return after a rocky opening stretch?
As an argument for where Season 9 can go next, “Secrets” is more convincing than it is conclusive. The episode guide’s early descriptions include space-emergency plots, while Episode 7’s official premise turns toward Eddie’s night out and the ensemble’s personal lives. That shift helps the hour feel more grounded in the relationships that can sustain the series between spectacular calls.
The two strands also give the episode useful contrast: Buck’s romantic confusion is light and open-ended, while Hen’s secrecy threatens trust and safety. That range restores some of the show’s familiar tonal interplay. But the story does not resolve Hen’s health crisis, so the hour functions more as a reorientation than a clean slate. Viewers looking for an answer to whether the season is fully back on track will have to judge that against what follows.
