Interviewed by co-anchor Deborah Roberts, Blanchard spoke about life after prison, reckoning with her past, sudden public attention and being newly married to Ryan Anderson. The marriage was part of the January 2024 context—not a description of her relationship status today.
When did Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s 20/20 interview air?
The special aired Friday, January 26, 2024, from 9:01 to 11 p.m. Eastern on ABC. ABC announced it two days earlier as Blanchard’s first television interview since her release from prison. The network said it would be available the next day on Hulu; that announcement does not establish its current streaming availability. ABC’s program announcement described the special as a conversation about her time behind bars, her reckoning with the past and how she was handling newfound fame.
Roberts conducted the interview. The two-hour program also included an interview with lead detective Lt. Stan Hancock and conversations with Blanchard’s father and stepmother, a neighbor and friend, her defense attorney, a treating pediatric neurologist and an expert on abuse involving fabricated or induced illness. An ABC News clip published January 5 was labeled her first television interview since release; it preceded the full special.
What did she say about newfound fame?
In the January interview, Blanchard addressed becoming a public figure just after leaving prison. The Guardian quoted her saying, “Honestly, I’m a very shy person,” and, “I don’t think that I’m doing anything that anybody else wouldn’t do.” The remarks reflected how she described herself and her behavior in that conversation, not an objective measure of public opinion. The Guardian’s January 26 coverage also quoted her describing herself as newly married and saying she was “living my best married life” with her husband.

In a separate ABC News interview with Juju Chang published May 30, 2024, Blanchard said she had not expected the scale of her social-media audience: “I had no idea that I would have 9.8 million followers.” ABC reported that she then had nearly 10 million TikTok followers. That figure is a May 2024 snapshot, not a current count. In the same interview, she said, “Quite honestly, I’m starting to feel like they want a perfect victim and there is no such thing as a perfect victim.” That was her perception of the attention and expectations she faced, not a finding about all viewers. ABC’s May report covered her life after prison, social-media attention and divorce filing.
What did “married life” mean in the interview?
Blanchard and Anderson had married in June 2022 while she was incarcerated. In the January 2024 20/20 interview, she described herself as newly married and said she did not think her experience was different from that of other wives. The Guardian quoted those remarks in its coverage of the broadcast.
The marriage later became part of a different conversation. ABC reported that Blanchard filed for divorce in April 2024. In the May interview, she said they had been together for three years, had experienced ups and downs, and that “sometimes relationships just take its course.” She also said, “I’m not afraid of Ryan,” and regretted marrying while still in prison. These statements belong to that May interview, not to the January 20/20 conversation. The available reporting does not establish her relationship status today.
How does the special fit with her other interviews?
Several interviews followed Blanchard’s December 28, 2023 release from Chillicothe Correctional Center. They are separate conversations with different interviewers and emphases:

Blanchard pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after the 2015 killing of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. The Associated Press reported that she served more than eight years of a ten-year sentence before being released on parole in December 2023. Nicholas Godejohn, her secret boyfriend and a participant in the killing, was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life, according to AP. The Associated Press’s January 2, 2024 report also quoted Blanchard reflecting on prison as “nothing but self-discovery”; those remarks came from AP’s interview, not the 20/20 special.
ABC’s coverage described expert assessment that the case involved abuse associated with fabricated or induced illness, historically referred to as Munchausen by proxy. That is expert framing reported by ABC, not a diagnosis to assign casually or an explanation that erases the complexity of the case. The special brought together Blanchard’s account, law-enforcement and legal perspectives, family and community voices, and medical expertise; the interview should be understood in that broader context rather than as a verdict on the crime.
