In the December 2024 announcement, the digital return was described as availability to rent or buy. That distinction matters: a digital listing does not by itself mean the film is included with a streaming subscription. Check your local storefront to see whether it offers a rental, a purchase, or both.
What happened with the digital release?
On December 17, 2024, Exclaim! reported that 28 Days Later would return to digital rental and purchase the following day, December 18. The report linked renewed interest to the trailer for 28 Years Later. The “finally returning” framing described that moment; Sony’s current page now lists the film as digital.

The available reports do not establish a definitive explanation for the film’s earlier difficulty to find legally, so it is better not to assume a particular rights dispute or transfer caused the gap.
Which digital storefront should I check?
| Storefront | What is established | What to verify locally |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV | Sony lists it as a digital option. | Whether the film is available to rent or buy, the price, and playback terms in your country. |
| Prime Video | Sony lists it as a digital option. | Whether a local listing is transactional or included with a subscription; Sony’s page does not say it is subscription-included. |
| Fandango | Sony lists it as a digital option. | Whether the store serves your territory and the current rental or purchase terms. |
| YouTube | Sony lists it as a digital option. | Whether a local movie listing is available and its current price and terms. |
Store catalogs and prices can change, and Sony’s page does not provide a country-by-country availability list. A third-party Moviefone availability page can be a secondary prompt, but treat any listed price or offer as a snapshot and confirm it directly with the retailer before paying.

Can I buy the DVD or Blu-ray instead?
Exclaim!’s December 2024 coverage described DVD and Blu-ray copies as elusive at that time. That does not establish current stock or the condition of copies now being sold. If you want a physical edition, check the seller’s actual listing for availability, region compatibility, and whether the copy is new or used; Sony’s current digital page does not verify physical inventory.
