Spoilers for the March 12 and March 19, 2026 episodes of 9-1-1. The show finally made the Buck-and-Eddie subtext impossible to miss: strangers mistake their bickering for couple behavior, and a frightening ordeal leaves Eddie looking after Buck. But the episode does not make them a couple. What it does do is give their bond sharper comic edges—and a much more serious emotional consequence.
What “the thing” actually was
In the March 12, 2026 road-trip episode, Buck and Eddie head back to Los Angeles after the 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville crossover. At a diner, locals interpret the friends’ bickering as the familiar squabbling of a couple. The episode leans into that misunderstanding rather than treating it as a one-off gag.

Then the story turns dangerous: a grieving waitress abducts Buck, and Eddie searches for him and helps secure his release. The two friends save each other. Showrunner Tim Minear told TVLine the episode was written to play up those misunderstandings, while warning that the ordeal would have “real fallout.”
Are Buck and Eddie a couple now?
No. The episode makes the couple-like reading of their dynamic explicit, but it does not establish a romantic relationship. Buck and Eddie remain close friends and colleagues on screen. “Buddie” is the fan name for the pairing; it is not the characters’ current relationship status.

That distinction matters because the episode offers two different things at once: a joke built around how other people see them, and a crisis that deepens the stakes of their friendship. Neither is a declaration or a first step into dating.
What the March 19 episode adds
The next episode follows the abduction’s aftermath instead of resolving it with a romantic turn. Eddie notices Buck’s behavior and challenges him when Buck says he is attending therapy. Later, Eddie sees a disturbing image of Buck taking pills from a hidden stash. Buck tells him things got “weird,” but that he is starting to feel like himself again.
That development gives the road-trip episode’s intimacy a harder context: Eddie is not simply a friend in a flirtatious-looking scene, but someone alert to Buck’s distress and willing to confront him. The story leaves the consequences in the realm of trauma and care, not couple status. TVLine’s March 19 recap details the episode’s events.
What the showrunner and actors have said
Tim Minear: playful about the dynamic, careful about the format
Minear told TVLine, “I’m done apologizing for it,” referring to the couple-like banter he wrote. He also said, “I just don’t think it’s maybe a big deal yet,” about how aware the characters are of the dynamic. Those remarks describe the writing and the characters’ possible awareness; they do not confirm a relationship.

In a TV Insider report published January 10, 2026, Minear said, “It is a very difficult subject because I love the Buddie fans, and I am one of them,” while noting that 9-1-1 is a procedural rather than a romance-centered drama.
Oliver Stark and Ryan Guzman: possibility versus present-day bond
Oliver Stark, who plays Buck, has described some Buck-and-Eddie scenes as “charged moments” and said he would welcome a romantic story if it developed authentically. Ryan Guzman, who plays Eddie, has emphasized the bond’s genuine, platonic quality and said “right now it stands as it is.” Their comments show openness and different emphasis, not a shared announcement that the pairing is canon.

What “Buddie canon” means right now
The clearest reading is that the show is deliberately playing with a charged friendship, including the way outsiders mistake it for romance. The March 12 episode makes that material unusually overt; the March 19 follow-up grounds the closeness in Eddie’s concern for Buck after a traumatic event. Neither episode changes the on-screen relationship label.
Later character context does not change that answer. In a May 8, 2026 recap, CinemaBlend reported on Guzman’s description of their complementary, humorous dynamic and noted that the Season 9 finale leaves Buck fostering Theo, his biological son. That is context for Buck’s life, not evidence that Buck and Eddie are dating.
