Spoilers: In “Only Gunshots to Guide Us,” Alex fights back against a passenger who assaults her on a train, while Teonna, Runs His Horse, and Pete struggle to stay ahead of Marshal Kent and Father Renaud. Spencer’s brief parallel story ends with him heading for Montana, and Teonna’s plot closes on an unresolved gunfight.
What happens to Teonna in “Only Gunshots to Guide Us”?
Teonna, her father Runs His Horse, and Pete are moving north, trying to escape Marshal Kent and Father Renaud. A cowboy who traveled with Teonna first denies knowing her, but confirms the connection after Renaud backs Kent’s accusation. The pursuers learn the fugitives have gone north.
The escape is wearing the group down. Their horses need water, and Pete separates from Teonna and Runs His Horse to look for it. Teonna despairs that they may not get away. Runs His Horse argues that they must survive because they are the last ones still resisting.
Pete finds water, but Kent and Renaud catch up with him. During the ensuing pursuit, Pete’s exhausted horse collapses. Pete and Kent exchange gunfire, and the episode ends without showing whether Pete is killed or captured.

How does Alex’s train journey turn violent?
Alex’s ticket does not include meals, so she bargains with a porter to work in the dining car in exchange for food. A passenger humiliates and harasses her, then sexually assaults her during a later shift. Alex strikes him with a coffee pot.
Train staff detain Alex, leaving the passenger’s version of events in danger of defining what happened. In Chicago, Paul and Hillary, an English couple she met aboard the train, speak up for her. Their account helps establish that Alex acted in response to the assault, and police arrest the passenger.

Alex also reveals that she is pregnant. When snow cancels her next train, Paul and Hillary invite her to stay with them. The episode gives her a moment of support after a journey in which even access to food and transportation has been precarious.
Where does Spencer’s story leave him?
Marshal Mamie Fossett finds Spencer dehydrated and brings him to Amarillo. Sheriff McDowell confirms that Spencer is a Medal of Honor recipient and warns him against returning to start a war. Fossett says she cannot hold him for something he might do in the future, then releases him. Spencer boards a train for Montana.

Why Alex and Teonna’s stories dominate this episode
The Dutton ranch storyline recedes as the episode follows two women facing very different forms of danger. Teonna’s escape depends on distance, water, and the condition of her group’s horses; Alex is confined to a train where food, safety, and onward travel are not assured. Both are forced to make choices under pressure, but the episode leaves Teonna’s immediate fate uncertain while Alex gets help from people willing to speak up for her.
