Why are the wolves a threat at the ranch?
At the ranch, a wolf bites Elizabeth in the chicken coop. The bite raises the possibility of rabies. When the doctor arrives, Elizabeth resists treatment, but those around her administer it.
Later, Cara wakes to a noise and a scream. She finds snow inside the house and the nurse dead. The episode ends on that discovery, leaving the wolf threat—and the family’s safety—unresolved.

Alexandra at sea
On her way to New York, Alexandra writes to Spencer about missing him and imagining their future family. Her brief scene underscores the distance between them as his route home becomes less certain.
Where does the episode leave the Duttons?
The episode’s danger is both literal and practical. Winter traps Jacob’s party outside, while the wolf bite and the nurse’s death bring the threat inside the ranch house. Meanwhile, the developments involving Spencer, Teonna, and the marshals remain separate storylines rather than converging with the Duttons’ crisis in this installment. The final discovery leaves the family facing an open cliffhanger.
