Spoilers for “Wrap Thee in Terror,” Season 2, Episode 3 of 1923. Alex reaches New York, but her attempt to enter the United States turns into the episode’s most punishing ordeal. While she fights to continue west toward Spencer, Elizabeth tells Jack she wants to leave the ranch and return to Boston. The official episode title is “Wrap Thee in Terror.”
What happens to Alex in “Wrap Thee in Terror”?
After surviving the Atlantic crossing, Alex arrives in New York and faces immigration processing at Ellis Island. The episode makes her arrival a sharp contrast to the welcoming image of America she expected: officials subject her to invasive examinations and raise the possibility that her pregnancy could complicate her admission.
An official questions her marriage to Spencer and tests whether she can read. Spencer has given her a book, and Alex reads from it to demonstrate her literacy. She then calls out the official’s hypocrisy. The confrontation does not erase the humiliating treatment, but Alex receives the acceptance stamp and is admitted to the United States.
Julia Schlaepfer, who plays Alex, described the gap between expectation and experience in a TV Insider interview published March 9, 2025: “all I see are posters and images of how beautiful and welcoming and free America is, and you’re treating us like animals.” That is the episode’s dramatic framing of Alex’s encounter, rather than a claim about every immigrant’s experience.

Where is Alex headed, and what happens at the end?
Once admitted, Alex makes her way to Grand Central and buys a train ticket toward Montana, hoping to reunite with Spencer. Her journey remains uncertain: at the end of the episode, a man follows her into a station bathroom. The scene leaves Alex facing a new threat just as she is trying to continue west.
Why does Elizabeth want to leave the ranch?
At the Dutton ranch, Elizabeth tells Jack she wants no part of ranch life and plans to return to Boston. She has not left yet. Cara also gives her further rabies injections after the earlier animal encounter.

- 1923: A Yellowstone Origin Story: Season One and Two, Complete Box Set, DVD Disc Collection
Alex and Elizabeth face danger under very different circumstances. Alex persists through a degrading process because she is determined to reach Spencer; Elizabeth says she wants to leave a life she does not want. The episode places those choices side by side without making either woman’s response a simple measure of courage or resolve.
What happens in Teonna’s storyline?
The pursuit of Teonna continues in parallel. Marshal Kent and Father Renaud infer where she may be headed, while the Comanches are also pursuing the fugitives. The episode keeps this thread moving alongside the longer focus on Alex’s arrival and Elizabeth’s decision.

What did the Ellis Island sequence involve behind the scenes?
Schlaepfer told TVLine that filming the examination sequence took about eight hours and took place on a closed set. That is a production detail about shooting the scene, not a measure of the characters’ time in the story.
