On June 7, 2025, Donald Trump warned Elon Musk that he would face “very serious consequences” if he funded Democratic candidates to challenge Republicans who supported Trump’s tax and immigration bill. Trump did not say what those consequences would be. The warning came during a public dispute over the legislation and after Trump had separately raised the possibility of ending government contracts with SpaceX.
What did Trump threaten Elon Musk with?
In a Saturday phone interview with NBC News, Trump said Musk would “pay the consequences” if he funded Democratic candidates running against Republicans who backed the bill. He then said: “He’ll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that.” The Washington Post reported the remarks on June 7, 2025; contemporaneous ABC News coverage also recorded the warning.
The condition Trump named was hypothetical: Musk funding Democratic challengers to Republicans who supported the legislation. Trump did not identify a specific penalty or say what “very serious consequences” meant. ABC News reported that, when asked, Trump also said he had not discussed investigating Musk over his business dealings or immigration record.
Why were Trump and Musk in conflict?
The warning came as a public falling-out over Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill legislation. Musk criticized the bill, including its projected effect on the national debt, and the disagreement escalated into an exchange on social media. The Washington Post reported that Musk had recently left his formal role as a special government employee overseeing the U.S. DOGE Service.

Trump said he assumed the relationship was over and had no intention of speaking to Musk, according to The Guardian’s June 7 report. The Guardian also reported that Musk deleted a post asserting links between Trump and Jeffrey Epstein and withdrew a threat to decommission SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. Those were developments in the broader dispute, not an explanation of the consequences Trump named.
Was Trump threatening to cancel SpaceX contracts?
Trump had separately suggested terminating government contracts with SpaceX during the dispute. The Washington Post reported that he later said he had not given further thought to ending contracts with SpaceX or Starlink. That earlier contract comment should not be treated as the stated meaning of the later “very serious consequences” warning: in the NBC interview, Trump did not specify that contract termination—or any other particular action—would follow if Musk funded Democratic candidates.

The contemporaneous reports establish the warning and its condition, but leave the consequences undefined. They do not establish what, if anything, happened afterward. The Guardian reported Trump saying, “I have no intention of speaking to him,” but that remark likewise did not clarify what he meant by the warning.
