Spoilers for The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 and Critical Role Campaign One.
The season 3 finale changes how Scanlan Shorthalt leaves Vox Machina: instead of ending on the angry rupture of Campaign One’s “Bard’s Lament,” the animated series makes his departure a more direct choice to go with his daughter, Kaylie. Sam Riegel, who voices Scanlan and is part of the creative team, said the show did not want to end the season with Scanlan angrily rejecting the group. That change feels much-needed because it keeps the farewell rooted in the emotional direction of the animated story rather than reproducing the campaign’s harsher blowup.
What changes in the season 3 finale?
In the animated series, Scanlan chooses to leave with Kaylie. His goodbye is framed around love and family; the finale does not end with him telling Vox Machina to go away in anger.
That is a meaningful shift from the campaign’s “Bard’s Lament,” where Scanlan’s relationship with Kaylie was only part of a more complicated break. Season-three adaptation coverage describes the campaign version as shaped as well by addiction, resentment, and his feeling that the group took him for granted. The animated departure narrows the emphasis: Scanlan is choosing his daughter and the life he wants beyond the party.

Why did the show change Scanlan’s departure?
Riegel explained the choice in a cast interview: “I’m a little nervous to see what the audience thinks about that, but it was the last episode of the season, and we didn’t want to end the season with Scanlan telling everybody to go fuck themselves. But I think what we did was sort of pay attention to the emotional arc that he was going through and really followed what he would be doing in that situation in the animated series.”
His explanation points to two practical aims: ending the season without an explosive rejection of the team, and making Scanlan’s actions fit the arc established in this version of the story. The result does not erase the hurt behind his decision, but it presents the goodbye less as a reckoning with Vox Machina and more as a step toward Kaylie.

The animated series is based on Critical Role’s Campaign One, but adaptation does not mean reproducing every scene exactly. Matt Mercer has described the approach as keeping the campaign’s spirit while changing elements to serve the series’ larger narrative. He also said the adaptation’s changes were made with consensus. That is broad context for the show’s choices, rather than a specific explanation of Scanlan’s finale.
