How the clues point to the groups
Motor City and Bayou State
“Motor City” points to Detroit, home to the Lions, Pistons, Red Wings and Tigers. “Bayou State” points to Louisiana: this group combines the Green Wave and Ragin’ Cajuns with the Pelicans and Saints.

Trading-card terminology
“Want to trade?” nudges toward trading cards. AUTOGRAPH, BASE, INSERT and RELIC are the four descriptors in the group; the clue does not mean that physical cards are needed to play.
Words that pair with “time”
“Tick-tock” signals the final connection. Add “time” after each word to make full time, hang time, stoppage time and tee time.

Parade describes Connections Sports Edition as a daily word game with 16 words divided into four groups of four. It attributes the game’s instruction to the New York Times as: “group sports terms that share a common thread.” The same guide reports that the puzzle resets at 12 a.m. EST daily; that reset detail is reported by Parade, rather than verified here against an official NYT rules page.
