The Warrens stop the attack by confronting the mirror together: Ed, Lorraine, and Judy face and touch it in unison, and it shatters. The film shows the immediate danger ending, but it does not establish beyond doubt that the force behind the mirror has been destroyed forever.
How do the Warrens defeat the demon at the end?
The climax brings the film’s opening mystery back to its final case. A mirror appears in the flashback tied to Judy’s birth, then resurfaces years later during the Smurl family haunting. The film presents the haunting spirits as part of a deeper threat connected to the mirror, which ultimately turns its attention toward Judy.
When Judy is possessed and in danger, Ed and Tony help save her, but Ed’s individual effort does not resolve the crisis. His exorcism attempt and apparent solo success are not the decisive victory. The turning point comes when Ed, Lorraine, and Judy face and touch the mirror together. It breaks, and the immediate attack stops.
The solution is therefore more than a physical assault on the object: the family refuses to flee, and Judy is no longer being kept apart from the abilities the film associates with her. The movie does not lay out a complete set of supernatural rules, however, or name the force in a way that proves exactly what happened to it.

Is the mirror demon destroyed or only contained?
What the film visibly confirms is limited: the mirror shatters and the active attack ends. It does not clearly confirm that the entity has been permanently erased. The artifact-room epilogue can be read as containment, but that is an interpretation rather than a definitive explanation of the force’s fate. So “the Warrens stop the threat” is supported by the ending; “the demon is destroyed forever” goes further than the film establishes.
Why does the demon target Judy?
The film links Judy’s vulnerability to the mirror’s history and to her paranormal sensitivity. Lorraine has spent much of Judy’s life trying to shield her from visions and the supernatural. In the climax, Lorraine urges her to face what she senses rather than suppress it or run. Judy’s role in the confrontation marks a shift: she acts with her parents instead of being kept outside the family’s work.

What happens to Judy, Ed, and Lorraine afterward?
Judy survives and later marries Tony. The epilogue shifts from the immediate case to a farewell for the Warrens. According to the film’s on-screen text, the Smurls remained in their home for another three years. Dexerto’s account of the epilogue says Ed later suffered a stroke at 74, Lorraine cared for him for five years, and she died at 92; these are details presented in the film’s closing account, not independently verified biographical claims here. Dexerto’s ending explainer describes those epilogue details.
Is the ending based on the real Smurl haunting?
The reported Smurl haunting and the Warrens’ involvement inspired the film, but the mirror-centered mythology is not presented as documented history. The mirror’s connection to Judy’s birth, Judy’s investigation, her possession, and the final confrontation are fictionalized or substantially changed for the movie. CNA’s report on the film and its inspiration identifies the Smurl case as the basis, while Clouds Press’s ending analysis distinguishes the reported case from the film’s mirror and Judy plot.

Does Last Rites end the Conjuring franchise?
Director James Wan described the film as the final chapter for Ed and Lorraine, not as a definite end to every story in the wider universe. In CNA’s report, Wan said: “We don’t want to be doing this 20 movies down the line, where we’ve driven the franchise into the ground.” The ending closes the couple’s story as portrayed in this film, while leaving the future of the broader franchise unsettled. CNA reports Wan’s comments.
Warner Bros.’ official movie site calls the title the ninth theatrical entry in the Conjuring universe and lists an on-disc option. It also describes the universe as having more than $2 billion in theatrical gross, without dating that figure.
