On May 29, 2024, Donald Trump attacked Robert De Niro on Truth Social, a day after the actor warned at a Biden-campaign event outside Manhattan Criminal Court that Trump could become a tyrant if reelected. The campaign appearance took place across the street while closing arguments were underway in Trump’s hush-money trial; it was not part of the court proceedings.
What did Robert De Niro say outside the courthouse?
On May 28, 2024, De Niro spoke at a Biden-campaign press event across the street from Manhattan Criminal Court. He warned about the consequences of Trump returning to the White House, saying, “If Trump returns to the White House, you can kiss these freedoms goodbye that we all take for granted.” He also said, “Donald Trump wants to destroy not only the city but the country, and, eventually, he could destroy the world.” The “tyrant” framing referred to De Niro’s warning about what Trump could become if reelected; it was political criticism, not a court finding. The Associated Press reported on the event and remarks.
Why was De Niro at Trump’s trial?
De Niro appeared with former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn and former Washington, D.C., police officer Michael Fanone at an event organized by Joe Biden’s campaign. The campaign said it wanted to refocus the presidential race on Trump’s role in the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler made clear the event was aimed at the news coverage surrounding the trial: “We’re not here today because of what’s going on over there,” he said, gesturing toward the courthouse. “We’re here today because you all are here.”
The event was not a court proceeding, and AP reported that the speakers did not address the criminal case directly. The trial’s concentration of media attention provided the setting for a campaign message. After De Niro spoke, he argued with a Trump supporter, according to an AP photo caption. Trump senior campaign adviser Jason Miller criticized the appearance, saying, “After months of saying politics had nothing to do with this trial, they showed up and made a campaign event out of a lower Manhattan trial day for President Trump.”

What did Trump say about Robert De Niro?
Trump left the courthouse on May 28 without making remarks that day, according to Forbes. Early the next morning, he responded on Truth Social by calling De Niro a “wacko” and saying he had “an incurable case of TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” Trump also claimed De Niro’s movies, artistry, and brand had declined in value since the actor entered politics. Those comments were Trump’s assessments, not independently established facts.
How the remarks fit the trial timeline
Closing arguments in Trump’s New York hush-money trial were underway on May 28. At that point, he faced 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, AP reported. The press event and Trump’s response came before the jury reached its verdict. On May 30, two days after De Niro’s appearance, the jury found Trump guilty on all 34 counts, according to AP’s verdict report.
