Her role as a mother and grandmother
Robinson was Michelle Obama’s mother and Craig Robinson’s mother. In her 2018 memoir Becoming, Michelle Obama wrote: “I would not be who I am today without the steady hand and unconditional love of my mother, Marian Shields Robinson.” AP quoted the passage in its report on Robinson’s death.
Her presence in the White House was not a public office or a political role. It was a family commitment that unfolded in an unusually public setting. In a statement issued on June 1, 2024, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden remembered Robinson as a devoted mother and grandmother, writing: “She moved into the White House to be there for her family when they needed her the most, and in so doing, she served her country right alongside them.”
