The 98-year-old made the quip after his tribute special won a Creative Arts Emmy in September 2024; it was a self-deprecating remark at an awards event, not an announcement of a planned memorial.
What was Dick Van Dyke’s memorial joke?
After the Creative Arts Emmy win, Van Dyke spoke with reporters about his mortality and joked, “I invited everyone to my memorial. I don’t have a date yet, but I’m not feeling too well about it.” Inside the Magic reported the line from the awards event (Inside the Magic).
The joke did not set a date or signal that a memorial was being planned. Its punchline was the imagined invitation and his mock concern about not feeling well.
What was the occasion?
Van Dyke made the remark after Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic won Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) at the September 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards. The Television Academy’s program lists the special as Dick Van Dyke 98 Years Of Magic (Television Academy).

The “98” refers to Van Dyke’s age at that 2024 event, not a current-age description. The memorial comment was reported in connection with the Creative Arts ceremony, not the later Primetime Emmy ceremony.
What else did Van Dyke say about his legacy?
In an interview reported by The Independent, Van Dyke said he hoped to be remembered “for laughter, for making people laugh for 75 years.” That was his own description of his legacy, rather than an independently verified career-duration statistic. He also said, “I can’t believe that I’m still here and performing,” and joked that he was looking for work (The Independent).
