A behind-the-scenes video shows how 9-1-1: Lone Star built the wreckage for Season 5’s opening train derailment: a railcar tipped onto its side, tanker fragments, scrap metal, fire, water and stunt work. The footage gives a look at the physical set, while the broader disaster was written as a three-part story.
What the derailment set looks like
The FOX behind-the-scenes video takes viewers into a large wreckage-filled set. Its transcript describes tanker parts and scrap metal, with a railcar flipped onto its side. Fire, water and performers working through the environment add to the sense of a chaotic crash site.
An unidentified speaker in the video calls it “one of the biggest sets I’ve ever been on.” The same video includes the line “All practical, all real” while describing tanker parts and scrap metal. That comment is about those elements; it does not establish that every effect in the sequence was practical.
The footage also shows stunt work and background performers. It supports the production’s emphasis on physical elements, but not a claim that every cast member performed every stunt.

How the production described the train wreck
Actor Rob Lowe described the opening as “a three-part, just catastrophic train derailment” and said the spectacle made him feel “like a little kid” when he went to the set. He was speaking about the scale of the production, not providing a technical account of how each shot was made. FOX 5 Atlanta published his comments on September 23, 2024.
Showrunner Rashad Raisani told TV Insider that the train cars were “15,000 pound or more” and described the sequence as using real explosions, fire and water. Put another way, Raisani’s reported figure is 15,000 pounds or more; it is not a count of the cars, nor does the report establish that every car weighed that much. TV Insider reported his comments in 2024.

Where the set fits in Season 5
The derailment launches the season’s opening multi-episode storyline, putting several lives at risk, including members of the 126. FOX listed the Season 5 premiere for September 23, 2024, and described the opening as a multi-episode disaster story. FOX Corporation’s Fall 2024 announcement provides the premiere date and premise.
The set video is most useful as a look at the tangible ingredients behind that story: overturned rail equipment, scattered metal, fire, water and performers doing stunt work. It does not document every effect or reveal how all the footage was assembled.
