In a 2022 interview for CBS Sunday Morning, Chevy Chase answered questions about former colleagues describing him as difficult by saying, “I guess you’d have to ask them,” and, “I don’t give a crap. I am who I am, and I like who I am.” He also said he was hurt that he could not say more. The exchange was not an apology, and it is distinct from comments he made years later about leaving Community.

What Chevy Chase said in 2022

Correspondent Jim Axelrod asked Chase about reports that former colleagues had called him difficult and whether those accounts were “unfounded cheap shots.” In the interview, as quoted by Entertainment Tonight on February 15, 2022, Chase replied: “I guess you’d have to ask them.” He continued: “I don’t give a crap. I am who I am, and I like who I am. I don’t care. And it’s part of me that I don’t care. I’ve thought about that a lot. I don’t know what to tell you, man. I just don’t care.”

His answer was dismissive of the criticism, but he also described feeling constrained by the conversation. “Look, I’m trying to be honest and I know that doesn’t help me,” he said, adding, “And I’m sort of hurt by the fact that I can’t go any further with this,” according to Entertainment Tonight.

Why Community was part of the conversation

Chase played Pierce Hawthorne for four seasons of Community. Contemporary accounts described tensions over the character’s direction and reported an on-set outburst. Those reports should be understood as accounts from publications and participants, not as a settled finding about Chase’s intent or a single shared view among the cast.

A 2022 TV Insider report revisited the production tensions, including disagreement over how Pierce was written. Chase had discussed the character in a 2010 interview with TIME, describing Pierce as a bigot and saying of his reputation for being difficult to work with, “I’ll never understand that.” That was Chase’s own response at the time, not independent confirmation or a rebuttal of what colleagues experienced.

How the story developed after the 2022 interview

2010: Chase on Pierce and his reputation

In its 2010 interview, TIME asked Chase about Community and Saturday Night Live. His remarks offer an earlier point of comparison, but they should not be folded into the separate 2022 exchange with Axelrod.

2022: a direct response to the criticism

The CBS interview supplied the clearest concise response to the question of whether Chase cared about being called difficult: he said he did not, while also acknowledging hurt at not being able to continue. Entertainment Tonight reported his words from the interview; it was not a published full transcript.

2026: a later account of leaving Community

In January 2026 coverage, Chase characterized his departure from Community as a misunderstanding. As quoted by TV Insider, he said, “It was too great a misunderstanding of what I was saying and not saying.” He also said cast members did not realize he was not racist. These are his later explanations, not part of the 2022 interview.

Yvette Nicole Brown, whose experience was also being discussed, objected in a statement reported in the same TV Insider article to other people speaking for her: “Anyone currently speaking FOR or ABOUT me with perceived authority is speaking without EVER speaking to me about the things they claim to know about.” The article also reported her point that others did not know her relationships with people she worked with. Her statement should not be treated as an endorsement of Chase’s account or of someone else’s interpretation of her experience.

The documentary-era comments are another separate response

The Associated Press covered the 2026 documentary I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, directed by Marina Zenovich. In that context, Chase described the criticism as “just Hollywood stuff” and said, “It never really bothered me,” according to the Associated Press. That later characterization does not replace or change what he said in 2022: in the CBS interview, he expressed indifference to the label while also saying he felt hurt that he could not discuss it further.
