The quip followed co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin’s reminder to stay in line; it was comic banter, not official voting advice.
What did Whoopi Goldberg say?
In an account published by AOL on November 5, 2024, reporter Joey Nolfi wrote that Goldberg first thanked people heading out to vote and said, “Don’t sit this one out.” After Griffin urged voters to stay in line, Goldberg joked: “Stay in line, yes, because any little thing — you pass a little gas, they want to move you out.” She continued: “So, just hold it. Clutch. Just stand clutched until you get in there and then, once you’re behind the curtain, let it rip.” Read Nolfi’s contemporaneous account.
The wording above is attributed to Nolfi’s report; a primary broadcast transcript was not independently verified.
What was the context of the joke?
The exchange came during the show’s election-day coverage, after Griffin’s practical reminder that voters should remain in line. The gas remark was a punchline about waiting for privacy in the booth, not a serious instruction about voting. Nolfi’s account describes the studio audience cheering.
#1 Best Overall
The same report says Goldberg separately encouraged viewers who witnessed voter harassment to call someone for help. That was a distinct message, not part of the gas joke.

Goldberg and The View had been associated with earlier on-air fart-related jokes, but those moments are separate from the 2024 election-day exchange. A May 10, 2023 Los Angeles Times report covered earlier jokes and Goldberg’s response to speculation about a sound at the show’s table; it does not establish the wording or context of the later remark.
