Spoilers for the season-one finale of Constellation. The final shot suggests that the Jo left on the International Space Station is aware: her eyes follow a floating iPad, and she reaches for it. But the episode does not confirm whether she has survived, crossed into another reality, or undergone some other change. Actor Noomi Rapace believes that Jo is not dead; that is her interpretation, not a definitive explanation in the finale.
What happens to Jo in the final scene?
After the episode follows Jo and Alice on Earth, it returns to the International Space Station. The Jo who appears lifeless there watches the floating iPad and grabs it while a recording of her and Alice’s FaceTime call plays. The movement makes renewed awareness the clearest reading of the image, but the scene stops short of explaining her physical condition or how she might have regained awareness. TVLine’s finale recap and interview likewise leaves the image open.
So the careful answer to “Is Jo alive?” is: the finale strongly hints that the ISS Jo is conscious or becoming conscious, but it does not confirm her survival in a straightforward, medical sense. Nor does it show exactly what happened to make her move.
Does Rapace think the ISS Jo is alive?
Yes. In a Television Academy interview published April 25, 2024, Rapace said the Jo on Earth is living in the other Jo’s body and that the Jo still in space “is not dead.” This is the actor’s reading of the story, rather than an explicit answer supplied by the episode.

Rapace was less certain about the final image while discussing the finale with TVLine. Asked whether the other Jo was alive, she answered, “I hope so!” She also said the ending’s image had not been settled when filming began. Her comments support the idea that the show deliberately leaves the scene unresolved; they do not establish a hidden mechanism or guarantee what would happen next.
Are there two versions of Jo?
The series presents paired versions of people whose lives belong to connected realities. Creator and showrunner Peter Harness described the framework as “mirrored realities,” not an unconstrained multiverse. In a March 27, 2024, post-finale interview with Nerds That Geek, he said characters from the two sets can cross over in certain circumstances. He connected that structure to separation, reunion, and the paths lives might have taken.

That description helps explain why the finale can show a Jo with Alice on Earth while another Jo remains on the ISS. It does not provide a detailed rulebook for how the realities work or establish which specific event caused the last movement. The episode’s emotional focus is clearer than its science-fiction mechanics.
What does the finale resolve for Jo and Alice?
Jo and Alice reach a fragile understanding. Alice recognizes that the Jo beside her is not quite her original mother, and Jo recognizes that difference too. They accept that they can still be mother and daughter to each other in the reality they now share. The two Alices also use their tape player for one last exchange, giving their relationship an emotional moment of connection.

These scenes offer a measure of emotional closure without settling the identities or mechanics behind the realities. Jo’s bond with Alice reaches an understanding; the fate of the Jo on the ISS remains unanswered.
What happens to the CAL and Henry?
The CAL storyline is left open as well. Bud destroys the device after the swap with Henry, but that does not settle the consequences of their exchanged circumstances. Henry remains in Bud’s life, and the finale leaves the wider reality phenomenon unresolved. The season closes its mother-daughter story beat while keeping the larger speculative plot in motion.
