Shaquille O’Neal’s mother is Lucille O’Neal, his biological father is Joseph Toney, and his stepfather, Philip Harrison, was the man who raised him. O’Neal has said he considered Harrison his father because of the role Harrison played in his life. The story also includes a later change in O’Neal’s relationship with Toney: in a 2022 interview, O’Neal described making amends and speaking with his biological father occasionally.
Who are Shaq’s parents?
- Mother: Lucille O’Neal.
- Biological father: Joseph Toney.
- Stepfather and principal father figure: Philip Harrison, an Army sergeant who helped raise O’Neal and encouraged his basketball ambitions.
So, if “real dad” means biological father, the answer is Joseph Toney. If the question is who raised Shaq and whom he regarded as his father, the answer is Philip Harrison. O’Neal has made that distinction himself.
Who is Shaq’s mother, Lucille O’Neal?
Lucille O’Neal was 18 when Shaquille was born, according to a 2010 biographical profile by CBN. The profile says she took responsibility for her son after his birth and later married Philip Harrison. Harrison’s military assignments moved the family, shaping the household in which Shaq grew up.
Lucille also played a role in the later history between Shaq and Joseph Toney. O’Neal told TIME in 2022 that after Harrison died in 2013, his mother encouraged him to make amends with Toney. That account is O’Neal’s description of what happened.

Who is Shaq’s biological father, Joseph Toney?
Joseph Toney is Shaq’s biological father. A 2002 Los Angeles Times report said Toney was present at Shaquille’s birth and gave him his name. The same report said Toney later went to federal prison after a conviction involving fraudulent checks.
Accounts of Toney’s absence and any effort to reconnect differ. In the 2002 report, Toney said he returned from prison to find Lucille married and himself out of the picture. Harrison gave another account: he said he and Toney met in a park and agreed Harrison would be Shaquille’s dad and care for him. Harrison recalled, “We even shook hands on it.” Toney said he had agreed to give up parental rights but had not said he did not want to see his son again. These are the men’s differing recollections, not an undisputed account of their agreement.

Who was Philip Harrison, and why did Shaq call him his father?
Philip Harrison was Lucille’s husband and Shaq’s stepfather. The New Yorker described him as an Army sergeant who married Lucille when Shaq was two, and said O’Neal credited Harrison with motivating him in basketball. TIME’s 2022 account gives Shaq’s age at the marriage as three; because published accounts differ, the exact age is not clear from these sources.
O’Neal was explicit about Harrison’s place in his life. In a 2011 interview about his memoir, he said: “I’ve spent those thirty years with another man and I call him my father, and that’s it.” Harrison died in 2013, according to TIME.

Did Shaq and Joseph Toney reconcile?
O’Neal said in a 2022 TIME interview that he later made amends with Toney and that they had a respectful relationship, speaking from time to time. Recalling what he told Toney, O’Neal said: “Man, I don’t hate you. We don’t need to talk about it. I know the story.
