Ghost in the Machine, directed by Valerie Veatch and presented by PBS’s Independent Lens, examines artificial intelligence through the lenses of history, bias, power, and social and environmental consequences. It is a sharply critical documentary: its alarm-bell framing reflects the film’s argument, not a neutral consensus that every claim about AI has been independently established.

What is Ghost in the Machine about?

PBS describes the film as an exploration of AI’s troubled history and present-day effects, asking how human values, biases, and power structures shape the technology and its consequences. Director Valerie Veatch’s page frames its questions plainly: “What is AI?”, “Who is building it?”, and “What will humans become?” (Valerie Veatch)

The film connects contemporary machine learning and text-to-image models to longer histories and disciplines. Sundance Film Festival reports that it draws on testimony from more than 30 experts. That is a description of the film’s scope, not independent verification of every historical, technical, political, or environmental claim it makes. (Sundance Film Festival)

Why does the documentary sound an alarm about AI?

The film’s critical case is that AI is not separate from the people and institutions that design, train, deploy, and benefit from it. PBS’s synopsis emphasizes the influence of human values and power, as well as social and environmental effects. The documentary invites viewers to question who gets to define intelligence and whose interests are served when machines are built to perform tasks associated with people.

In the PBS episode transcript, interviewee Emily M. Bender argues that comparing computer systems with human abilities can presume a ranking of people and then place machines alongside them in that hierarchy. That is Bender’s perspective as presented in the film, not a narrator’s neutral finding. (PBS episode and transcript)

Those concerns are the film’s argument. The PBS synopsis and Sundance’s festival feature describe the documentary and its perspective; neither, by itself, establishes the truth of every contested claim. Viewers should distinguish the film’s critique from independently sourced evidence about a particular AI system or impact.

Who made the film, and how long is it?

Valerie Veatch directed Ghost in the Machine. PBS presents it as Season 28, Episode 1 of Independent Lens. The PBS listing gives a runtime of 1 hour, 36 minutes, and 43 seconds and a TV-14 rating. (PBS)

DVD and organized screenings

Video Project lists a DVD edition, closed captioning, and educational or institutional licensing options for schools, libraries, colleges, businesses, and other institutions. Its page currently marks the item out of stock; check the distributor for current stock and license terms before planning a purchase or screening. (Video Project)

A group screening is a different use from personal viewing: confirm that the license covers your venue, audience, and intended event rather than assuming a personal copy includes public screening rights.

Is the documentary a neutral overview of AI?

No. It is best approached as a critical, argument-led documentary about AI’s history and effects. Its questions about bias, power, and human values can give viewers a framework for reflection, but the film’s framing should not be mistaken for a comprehensive technical survey or proof of every claim it raises. For a disputed claim, consult sources that independently document that specific issue.
