Amazon did not raise the price of U.S. Prime membership when it introduced Prime Video Ultra. As of August 18, 2026, Prime costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year. Ultra is a separate add-on: $4.99 per month, or $45.99 per year for eligible annual Prime members. Prime Video remains a Prime benefit, but the included tier has ads and does not include 4K/UHD or Dolby Atmos. Amazon’s Ultra announcement and its Prime pricing page distinguish the two charges.
What changed on April 10, 2026?
In the United States, Amazon replaced the former Prime Video Ad Free add-on with Prime Video Ultra on April 10, 2026. This was more than a name change: Ultra costs extra and groups several features into a higher tier. Amazon says the Prime membership price itself did not change when Ultra launched. The announcement describes Ultra as U.S.-only at that time; availability and terms can differ in other countries.
That means two common price claims need context:
- “Prime now costs $19.98 a month.” No. Prime remains $14.99 monthly. A customer who also chooses monthly Ultra pays $19.98 before tax for both.
- “Prime Video costs $4.99 a month.” That is Ultra’s add-on price, not the price of the broader Prime membership or necessarily a standalone video subscription.
Amazon’s announcement says Ultra raised the concurrent-stream limit from three to five and the download limit from 25 to 100, while placing 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos in the premium tier.
How much do the U.S. options cost?

The monthly and annual totals are arithmetic using Amazon’s published prices. Twelve monthly Ultra payments total $59.88, so the $45.99 annual Ultra option is $13.89 less for a full year. Discounted Prime eligibility does not, by itself, establish that Ultra is available at a discounted price. See Amazon’s discounted Prime information for the stated offers and conditions.

What does basic Prime Video include?
Amazon’s U.S. comparison lists thousands of movies and series, live sports, HD, HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, up to four concurrent streams, and up to 50 downloads with the standard Prime Video benefit. Included Prime Video programming carries advertising.
Those are plan-level limits and formats, not guarantees for every title or device. Resolution and audio depend on the title, playback device, connection, bandwidth, and other technical restrictions. Amazon’s feature comparison sets out the included and Ultra tiers.
What does Prime Video Ultra add?
Ultra adds ad-free viewing for eligible Prime Video content, UHD/4K, Dolby Atmos, up to five simultaneous streams, and up to 100 downloads. The annual $45.99 option is described for customers with annual Prime membership; do not assume it will appear for every account or billing arrangement.

Ultra does not guarantee that every title streams in 4K or Atmos. The catalog, device, bandwidth, provider, and other compatibility limits still matter. A 4K television alone does not ensure a UHD stream.

Does Ultra remove every advertisement?
No. Amazon says live TV, sports, events, and select ad-supported content may still contain advertising with Ultra. Separate channel subscriptions can have their own ad arrangements, too. The accurate description is “ad-free for eligible Prime Video content,” not “commercial-free everywhere.”
Prime Video is not one single kind of access
The Prime Video interface brings several kinds of video together. A title appearing in the app does not mean it is included in Prime or Ultra. Amazon’s Terms of Use distinguish subscription, rental, purchase, pay-per-view, and free or ad-supported access.

- Rentals and purchases: Separate title-specific charges, not included just because you have Prime or Ultra.
Amazon’s terms describe video-only subscriptions, but that does not establish that every U.S. customer can buy the same standalone Prime Video plan. Check the plan and billing choices shown for your marketplace and account. Before subscribing or starting a trial, look for labels such as “included with Prime,” “Subscribe,” “free trial,” “rent,” or “buy.” Amazon’s Prime Video overview explains the different kinds of content and subscriptions.
How to cancel Prime Video, Ultra, or Prime
For a subscription billed directly by Amazon, use Prime Video’s account settings. The relevant option depends on whether you are ending a video-only subscription or the broader Prime membership.
- Open Prime Video and go to Account & Settings.
- Select the Your Account tab.
- For a Prime Video-only subscription, choose End Subscription and follow the confirmation steps.
- To cancel Amazon Prime, use the Prime Membership section and select Edit on Amazon, then complete the cancellation confirmation.
- Keep the confirmation page or email and note the end date shown.
If Apple, Google, a mobile provider, or another third party bills you, cancellation generally must be completed through that provider’s subscription settings. Amazon’s cancellation help gives the Prime and Prime Video paths; its third-party billing guidance covers provider-managed subscriptions, including Apple billing.

Canceling usually prevents the next renewal; it does not necessarily end access immediately or refund the current period. Amazon says additional subscriptions tied to a Prime or Prime Video membership do not renew once the underlying membership ends, so review active Channels and other add-ons as well as the membership itself.

Cancellation and a refund are separate. Under Amazon’s Prime Video Terms of Use, a directly billed video-only subscription may qualify for a full refund if canceled within three business days of signup or conversion from a free trial, subject to deductions for service use. Outside that initial period, refund eligibility may depend on whether subscription content has been accessed since the latest charge. The terms describe a generally 14-day cooling-off period in the U.K. and European Union, subject to applicable rules and use of the service. Prime memberships follow their own terms, and third-party billing policies may differ.
If you cannot find the cancellation control, check whether you are in the right Amazon marketplace, whether another company bills you, whether you are in Prime settings rather than Prime Video settings, or whether the subscription is already canceled and active through its paid-through date.

Is Ultra worth the extra cost?
Ultra is easiest to justify when its specific features matter to your household. The upgrade is $4.99 monthly on top of Prime, not a replacement for the membership.
- Consider Ultra if you have compatible 4K equipment, want Dolby Atmos, regularly download many titles, have several people streaming at once, or strongly prefer fewer ads in eligible on-demand movies and shows.
- Stay with basic Prime Video if you mainly use Prime for shopping, watch casually on an HD screen, rarely download, do not mind ads, or primarily watch live sports and other programming where ads may remain.
The FTC refund program is a separate issue
The FTC’s Amazon refund program is not a refund for the 2026 Ultra change. It concerns certain consumers who enrolled in Prime through an enrollment flow challenged by the FTC, or tried to cancel online but could not, during June 23, 2019 through June 23, 2025. Eligibility also depends on factors such as use of Prime benefits and whether an automatic refund was already issued. The FTC says Amazon began sending claim notices in January 2026 to some eligible customers who had not received automatic refunds. It does not mean every Prime Video customer qualifies or that an Ultra charge is automatically refundable. Check the FTC’s Amazon refunds page for eligibility and claim information.
