There is no verified public announcement from Taylor Swift that she would sue over the AI-generated explicit images circulated in January 2024, and the sources cited here do not show a lawsuit filed over them. A 2024 report, citing a source close to Swift, said a legal response was still being considered. That is a report of possible action—not a public threat by Swift herself.
What happened with the fake images?
In late January 2024, sexually explicit images falsely depicting Swift spread online. ABC News described them as fabricated, AI-generated images. The material was nonconsensual; this article does not link to or reproduce it.
ABC News reported that one post sharing screenshots had been viewed more than 45 million times before the account was suspended. That was a reported view count for a single post, not a confirmed number of unique viewers. ABC News’ account of the incident also quoted Stefan Turkheimer, RAINN’s vice president of public policy, estimating that more than 100,000 images and videos of this kind spread online daily. That figure is his estimate, not an independently verified count.
Did Taylor Swift threaten to sue or file a lawsuit?
The available reporting does not establish that Swift personally made a public threat of legal action or filed suit over the images. The Daily Mail reported that a source close to her said whether to take legal action was still being decided. The distinction matters: an anonymously sourced account of a decision under consideration is not the same as a public statement from Swift or a court filing. The Daily Mail report is the basis for the claim that legal action was being considered.

What did platforms do?
X temporarily limited searches for Swift and said it was removing identified images. Its head of business operations, Joe Benarroch, described the search measure as “a temporary action” taken “with an abundance of caution” while prioritizing safety. The temporary search restriction was not proof that every copy had been removed; the images had also appeared on Facebook and other platforms, according to the Associated Press. AP’s report on X’s response gives the platform’s stated rationale.
ABC News quoted X’s policy statement: “Posting Non-Consensual Nudity (NCN) images is strictly prohibited on X and we have a zero-tolerance policy towards such content.” The statement describes X’s stated rule; it does not establish how completely the material was removed or moderated across the service.

Why the jet-tracking legal letter is a separate story
Swift’s lawyers did send a cease-and-desist letter to Jack Sweeney, who operated an account tracking private jets. TIME reported that the December 22, 2023 letter objected to publishing real-time, precise location information and alleged safety risks. It came before the January 2024 deepfake episode and concerned location tracking—not the fabricated images. TIME’s report on the letter explains that separate dispute.

ABC News reported that, at the time of the January 2024 incident, there was no federal U.S. law specifically preventing or deterring the creation and sharing of nonconsensual deepfake images. That is a description of the legal context reported at that time, not a statement of current federal or state law.

A California Senate Judiciary Committee analysis of AB 621 described proposed civil mechanisms concerning digitized sexually explicit material and services primarily intended to produce it. A committee bill analysis is not itself enacted law, and it does not establish the bill’s final status or current legal effect. The committee analysis of AB 621 should be read as a description of proposed provisions, not proof that they became law.
