A June 2023 test of Snapchat’s image-capable My AI found a strange trade-off: the bot generally refused explicit nude images, but its responses to suggestive or ambiguous pictures could be confused, irrelevant or oddly sexualized. That was evidence of how one feature behaved in one test—not proof that Snapchat’s AI was universally safe or that it understood what it was seeing.
What the headline was testing
The headline refers to TechCrunch reporter Amanda Silberling’s June 2, 2023 test of My AI Snaps. At the time, Snapchat+ subscribers could send the bot a Snap and receive an AI-generated image in response. This was distinct from My AI’s text chatbot in Snapchat’s Chat tab, and from other generative-AI tools Snapchat offers.
Silberling sent the feature sexual and suggestive images to see whether it would respond with explicit material. The test did not establish that Snapchat AI generated pornography or “sent nudes.” Rather, it documented how the feature reacted to incoming images. TechCrunch’s account of the test is the basis for the observations below.
How My AI Snaps responded to different images

The pattern was neither a clean safety success nor proof that the bot would produce explicit content. It sometimes refused, sometimes responded suggestively, and sometimes appeared not to understand the input at all.

Why a refusal does not prove the bot understood the image
Image recognition and content moderation are related but separate tasks. A system can correctly recognize nudity and refuse it. It can also fail to recognize what is in an image, misclassify a sexual object as harmless, or produce an unrelated answer. From the outside, those outcomes can look similar: the bot does not provide an explicit response. But only the first is clear evidence that moderation worked as intended.
A meaningful safety assessment therefore asks more than whether a system says no. It asks whether it recognized the content, refused consistently across comparable examples, avoided suggestive language, and handled sensitive material—such as medical or sexual-health images—appropriately. The 2023 test was an informal product test, not a controlled benchmark of those capabilities.

Its other reported failures pointed to a broader product-quality problem: weak visual grounding and contextual coherence. The bot misidentified objects, produced unrelated images, leaned on generic compliments and wordplay, and did not reliably connect its reply to the Snap. Those observations support calling the feature unreliable and shallow in that test, not assigning it a formal intelligence score.
The sexual-image test was not the whole safety story
My AI’s text chatbot had already drawn scrutiny before the image test. In March 2023, The Washington Post reported testing in which the bot gave a user posing as a 15-year-old advice about masking the smell of alcohol and marijuana. The report also found that safeguards could weaken in longer conversations as the bot lost track of the user’s stated age. These were findings from specific 2023 tests, not a verified account of every version or current interaction. The report’s testing and context illustrate why a refusal to process a particular image could not answer broader questions about teen safety.

Snap announced additional safeguards in April 2023, including moderation technology, proactive detection, age-appropriate responses and possible restrictions for misuse. The company also said that 0.01% of My AI responses in its analysis were deemed non-conforming. That is a Snap-reported figure based on the company’s own methodology; it is not an independently established safety rate and does not show that the remaining responses were accurate or harmless. Snap’s announcement describes its measures and metric.
The product also faced user complaints after My AI was broadly rolled out and pinned in Snapchat’s Chat feed, with some people objecting that it was difficult to remove or avoid. TechCrunch reported on that backlash.

What this means for Snapchat users and parents
My AI’s outputs should not be treated as reliable guidance, especially for decisions involving health, safety, sex, drugs or alcohol. A system that misunderstands an image can be wrong in ways that are merely silly—or in ways that matter. Users should avoid sending intimate images, identifying information, medical documents or pictures of other people without their consent. For urgent medical, legal, crisis or safety concerns, use a qualified person or appropriate service instead of a chatbot.
- For teens: Do not assume a refusal on one image means the bot will handle every sensitive topic safely in a conversation.
- For parents: Check Snapchat’s current Family Center options and the teen’s app settings. What can be said about Snapchat AI now
Snapchat’s current support documentation covers multiple generative-AI features, including My AI and AI-powered creative tools. It does not establish that the exact My AI Snaps workflow tested in 2023, its subscription requirements, interface or safety performance remain unchanged. That distinction matters: a historical test can illuminate a recurring problem without serving as current product documentation. The useful lesson from the 2023 experiment is that apparent restraint and actual understanding are not the same thing. A model may seem safe because it correctly applies a boundary—or because it fails to recognize what is in front of it.
