Jessyca Mullenberg was 13 when Steven Oliver, a teacher’s aide and writing-club mentor, abducted her in Wisconsin on September 16, 1995. She was held for more than three months and found after a motel restaurant manager recognized Oliver on America’s Most Wanted. Her rescue ended the confinement, not the long work of recovery. An account published by UNSEEN in January 2024 describes how she later rebuilt her life and spoke to students and families affected by abuse and missing-child cases.

Content note: This article discusses child abduction and physical and sexual abuse.

How was Jessyca Mullenberg abducted?

A trusted adult used a writing opportunity as a pretext

On September 16, 1995, 13-year-old Jessyca disappeared in Wisconsin. Reporting identifies Steven Oliver, a teacher’s aide and writing-club mentor, as her abductor. He told her that a publisher wanted to see her story. Instead, he restrained her in his car and took her away.

The deception exploited a relationship and interest that could have seemed legitimate to a young writer. In this case, the supposed publishing opportunity was a means to isolate Jessyca and take control of her movements.

What happened during the 104 days she was missing?

Confinement and abuse at a motel

Oliver held Jessyca for more than three months in an abandoned wing of a motel where he worked. ABC News reported that he disconnected the room’s telephone and subjected her to physical, sexual and psychological abuse.

In her first-person account for ABC News, Jessyca said, “Almost every day, I was either raped or I was hit.” She also described the effects of the control Oliver exerted: after about a month, she could no longer state her own name. The account makes clear that her ordeal involved not only being kept from others, but also a sustained effort to disrupt her sense of identity.

How did America’s Most Wanted lead to her rescue?

A motel employee recognized Oliver

The turning point came after Oliver appeared on an America’s Most Wanted broadcast. A manager at the motel restaurant recognized him from the program and contacted law enforcement and the FBI. Authorities reached Jessyca after about 104 days.

Reconnecting with her name and family

At first, Jessyca identified herself by the name Oliver had imposed on her. Photographs and a telephone call with her mother helped her reconnect with her identity. The rescue brought her out of confinement, but the immediate confusion underscores that being physically found and feeling safe or like oneself again are not the same thing.

What was recovery like after Jessyca returned home?

Rebuilding took time

The UNSEEN episode transcript describes a long recovery, not an instant return to ordinary life. It says Jessyca used art and writing to reconnect with herself. The transcript also reports that she completed college with honors in psychology, minored in sociology and criminal justice/law enforcement, married and had children despite earlier medical concerns. These details are reported by that account and should be understood as its biographical description.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), in its fifth-edition family guide updated in 2025, likewise emphasizes that reunification is when difficult recovery begins, and recommends continuing support and connections with survivor-led advocacy groups. That general guidance is not a claim about the particular services Jessyca received.

What survivor advocacy is Jessyca doing?

Speaking with students and families

The clearest documented description of Jessyca’s advocacy appears in a UNSEEN transcript published January 30, 2024. It reports that she speaks to grade-school, middle-school and high-school students about physical and sexual abuse. She also talks with children who have returned home and with parents whose children are still missing.

Describing the school talks, she said: “Today, I’ll go and do speeches to the grade schools and middle schools and high schools about physical abuse, sexual abuse. And if I can have one person or 50 people come forward…” The transcript presents the aim as encouraging people to come forward, rather than as a formal program with published enrollment or referral procedures.

Offering hope to families of missing children

Jessyca has also described why she shares her experience: “I survive so that I could continue living a life and being a part of the community and with my family. I’m a symbol of hope to a lot of the parents out there that are still, still have missing kids out there.” Her account connects survival with community and family, while recognizing the fear and uncertainty of parents whose children have not yet been found.

The January 2024 transcript establishes these speaking and outreach activities at that time. It does not establish a 2025–2026 advocacy organization, speaking calendar or booking contact, so none should be assumed.

Where can families seek support after a child returns?

Reunification is a transition, not a finish line. OJJDP’s 2025 family guide recommends ongoing support and connection with survivor-led advocacy groups. Families can use that guidance as a starting point when discussing next steps with qualified professionals and local child-advocacy services; it does not identify a provider endorsed by Jessyca.

  • Ask what continuing support is available to the child and family after reunification.
  • Look for survivor-centered services with expertise in children’s needs and privacy.
  • Consider the family’s location and whether support can continue over time.

These are practical considerations for navigating support, not a description of a specific service or a substitute for professional advice.
