HBO’s free-access offer was real, but it was temporary: in April 2020, the network opened a selection of its programming to non-subscribers during the COVID-era stay-at-home period. It was not the full HBO catalog or a permanent free tier, and it should not be mistaken for a current offer.
Which HBO shows were included?
Contemporary coverage of the promotion named these HBO series:

- The Sopranos
- The Wire
- Succession
- Veep
- Six Feet Under
- True Blood
- Ballers
- Barry
Lifehacker’s April 2020 coverage also described movies, documentaries and other programming as part of the offer. The available evidence does not establish that every season and episode of each listed series was available on every platform, so it is safest to treat this as a selection of HBO programming rather than a guarantee of complete series access.
How the promotion worked—and what is not established
The offer was reported in the United States as a limited COVID-era promotion. It was not a free trial, an ongoing no-cost HBO plan, or access to every title HBO carried. Contemporary accounts associated it with HBO’s digital viewing options, but platform-specific availability, account or provider sign-in requirements, and whether a payment card was requested are not established consistently enough to promise a particular sign-up experience. The promotion’s exact end date is likewise not established here; it should be treated as expired.
In 2020, HBO’s streaming products included HBO GO, generally tied to pay-TV authentication, and HBO NOW, a standalone service. Those names are historical context, not current instructions for finding the promotion. HBO’s streaming branding and products have since changed; HBO Watch’s overview of HBO streaming access discusses that earlier landscape.
Can you watch HBO shows for free now?
The April 2020 promotion is not evidence of a free HBO tier in 2026. Check the official HBO Max signup page for the current service name, plans and any promotional access available in your location. Plan names, prices and eligibility can change, so do not rely on old deal coverage. A title appearing in a platform’s search results also does not mean it is included for free: it may require a separate subscription, channel add-on, rental, purchase or provider sign-in.

- All 36 episodes from HBO's critically-acclaimed, controversial western series, starring Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane, set in the violent and corrupt South Dakota town of Deadwood in the days after Custer's defeat at the Little Big Horn.
If you already pay for cable, satellite or a live-TV package, check whether HBO is included and try signing in with your provider before paying for another subscription. For viewers seeking free entertainment rather than HBO originals specifically, Tubi, Pluto TV and The Roku Channel offer separate ad-supported catalogs. Their availability does not mean they carry the HBO shows in this promotion; check each service’s current listing for the exact title.

| Option | What to check | Cost and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| HBO Max subscription | Search the title and confirm it is included in the plan offered in your country. | Paid unless an active promotion applies; plans and prices change. |
| Existing TV or provider package | Check your account benefits and use the provider sign-in option if HBO is included. | May be covered by what you already pay, but access depends on the package. |
| Third-party channel or platform | Confirm that the vendor currently sells HBO access and whether it works in the HBO Max app. | Usually a paid add-on; platform listings can require a separate subscription, rental or purchase. |
| Free ad-supported services | Search Tubi, Pluto TV or The Roku Channel for the specific title. | Free with ads, but their catalogs are separate from HBO’s and do not guarantee HBO originals. |
For a single older show, compare a one-time rental or purchase with the cost of a recurring subscription. Library streaming services may also have selected licensed titles, but availability depends on the title and participating library; verify the listing rather than assuming an HBO series is included. Avoid unofficial IPTV services, pirate streaming sites and purported “free HBO” apps, which can be unlawful or expose devices and accounts to risk.
