Ingrid Andress sang the U.S. national anthem before a Colorado Avalanche game in Denver on February 28, 2025, a little over seven months after her Home Run Derby performance drew widespread attention. She later said she had been frightened to perform the anthem again, but chose the Colorado game because she grew up in the state. When the crowd joined in, she said, it felt like “stress relief.”
What happened when Ingrid Andress sang the anthem again?
Andress performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the Colorado Avalanche played the Minnesota Wild in Denver on February 28, 2025. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that the crowd joined in and the performance went over well. It was her first reported return to singing the anthem since the MLB Home Run Derby in Arlington, Texas, on July 15, 2024. The Star-Telegram’s March 13, 2025 report recounted the return and her comments in a Variety interview.
Why did she decide to sing it again?
Andress said she was initially so shaken that she told her team she would never sing the anthem again. She later reconsidered, despite being afraid of another mistake. As she put it: “I was like, ‘No, I need to do this. I’m terrified to do it. And honestly, if I mess it up twice, it’s really hard coming back from that,’” followed by, “You can’t mess it up two times in a row.”

She chose the Avalanche game because she grew up in Colorado. The audience’s participation surprised her and, in her words, felt like “stress relief.” She said the experience helped close that chapter and return her attention to songwriting and to the person she felt she really was. “There was a lot weighing on it, but I’m really happy that I did that, because it feels like that chapter of my story has closed and I can move on and get back to songwriting and like back to who I feel like I really am,” she said, as quoted by the Star-Telegram.

After singing at the MLB Home Run Derby on July 15, 2024, Andress said publicly the next day that she had been drunk during the performance and planned to enter a rehabilitation facility. The Guardian reported her statement: “I’m not gonna bullshit y’all, I was drunk last night,” and quoted her saying she was “checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need.” She also apologized to MLB, fans, and the country. The Guardian’s contemporaneous report covered her statement.

In the later interview, Andress described several personal changes before the event, including a manager change and a breakup. She said she had been drinking more than she realized to numb herself and had not felt like herself for weeks or months. She described the anthem performance as a signal that she needed to stop and work out what was happening: “I feel like the botching the anthem was the sign for me to be like, ‘Hey, we need to stop and figure out what’s going on.’” These are her own descriptions; the cited coverage does not establish a medical diagnosis or provide independent verification of rehabilitation details.
