The Crow’s Director on Bad Buzz, Curses and a Gothic Love Story

Rupert Sanders calls The Crow’s supposed curse an urban myth and describes his 2024 adaptation as a gothic love story. The 1994 film, directed by Alex Proyas, was shaped by a very real on-set tragedy: Brandon Lee’s fatal accident.

Rupert Sanders, director of the 2024 The Crow, says early bad buzz can make people look more closely at a film. He also calls the franchise’s supposed curse an urban myth—and describes his adaptation as a gothic love story centered on Eric and Shelly. That is a different film from Alex Proyas’s 1994 The Crow, whose production was marked by Brandon Lee’s fatal on-set accident.

Which Crow director is speaking?

The interview is with Rupert Sanders about his 2024 adaptation. Alex Proyas directed the 1994 film, which starred Brandon Lee as musician Eric Draven. Miramax’s official film page identifies the 1994 movie and summarizes its story: Eric and his fiancée are murdered on the eve of their Halloween wedding, and Eric returns a year later to pursue their killers. The AFI Catalog record credits James O’Barr, David J. Schow and John Shirley as writers and identifies O’Barr’s comic book series as the source.

Sanders characterizes the 2024 film as his own interpretation, made independently with a collaborative cast and crew. His comments about its romance and Shelly’s role describe his aims and his comparison with the earlier film; they are not a definitive account of every adaptation or a measure of audience opinion.

What does Sanders say about the bad buzz?

In his interview with Gizmodo/io9, Sanders suggests that negative conversation before release can lead people to examine a film more closely. That is his view of how early discourse might affect attention, not evidence that the response to the 2024 film was uniform or that criticism necessarily helps a movie.

Is The Crow cursed?

Sanders jokes that making the film required standing at a crossroads with a knife and blood, then distinguishes that gag from fact: he calls the supposed curse an urban myth. The “curse” language is a cultural story attached to the franchise, not an explanation for what happened to Brandon Lee.

What happened to Brandon Lee?

Lee died on March 31, 1993, while filming Proyas’s 1994 movie. The Washington Post’s 1994 account reported that a dummy projectile left in a .44-magnum pistol was propelled by a blank charge. The paper said the district attorney’s investigation concluded Lee’s death “was the result of ignoring basic and well-recognized safety guidelines.” It also reported there was no intent to harm Lee, that production shut down, and that Proyas initially did not want to continue. Proyas and much of the crew returned roughly two months later; producer Ed Pressman described completing the film as a tribute to Lee.

The Los Angeles Times reported in 1994 that the production had also faced storm damage to sets and other workplace incidents. It said North Carolina’s Occupational Safety and Health Division fined Crowvision $77,000 for three workplace violations. That is a historical figure reported in 1994, not a current penalty or a complete assessment of every safety practice on the production.

What safety point does Sanders make?

Speaking about his own set, Sanders said no live-firing guns were used. He summed up his priority this way: “To me safety is primary.” His comment concerns the 2024 production and should not be confused with the documented history of the 1993 accident.

Is the 2024 Crow a love story?

Sanders says the relationship between Eric and Shelly is central to his version and that he fought to preserve its romantic emphasis. He also describes Shelly as a more substantial character than in the prior film. These are the director’s stated creative choices, rather than an objective ranking of the two films or a claim that romance is the only element in either story.

How does the 1994 film create its gothic atmosphere?

The original film’s visual style has a distinct basis beyond its tragic production history. In a retrospective, the American Society of Cinematographers describes cinematographer Dariusz Wolski’s expressionistic use of light and shadow, desaturated imagery, and stronger color in flashbacks. The AFI record credits Wolski as cinematographer and Graeme Revell as composer. The ASC places the film at the intersection of science fiction, romance and horror, adapting O’Barr’s work into a revenge story. Those choices help explain its gothic mood; they do not substantiate a supernatural curse.
