In Wicked: For Good, “As Long as You’re Mine” does not begin with Elphaba and Fiyero already wrapped up in a close, face-to-face duet. Director Jon M. Chu wanted the scene to unfold through action and interaction: Fiyero visits Elphaba’s hidden home, sees the life she has made, and responds to her as a person while their connection grows. Screenwriter Winnie Holzman describes that slower build as a deliberate change from the stage approach she discusses.
Why Chu wanted the scene to unfold
Chu’s explanation, reported by Geo.tv from an Entertainment Weekly interview, is that the film needed more than a static exchange of looks and singing. He questioned whether the scene should have the characters “just sit and stare at each other and sing,” and talked about Fiyero visiting Elphaba’s “nest.” The visit gives the duet something to develop around: he can take in the place she has made for herself and see her in the context of her private life.
That activity also changes what the song communicates. Rather than treating the number as an instant declaration of closeness, the scene lets Fiyero’s growing appreciation emerge as he encounters Elphaba’s world. Chu’s reported remark, “It’s not fan fiction; this is a real character to her,” underscores that he wanted the moment to feel rooted in who Elphaba is, not just in what viewers might wish the romance to be.
How the film’s build differs from the stage approach Holzman describes
Holzman, who wrote the film, contrasts its pacing with the stage version she discusses. On stage, she says, the characters are close almost immediately and intertwined as they sing. For the movie, she wrote a slower build-up. That is her account of the contrast, not a claim that every stage production blocks the number in exactly the same way.

| What develops | Stage approach described by Holzman | Film approach described by Chu and Holzman |
|---|---|---|
| Physical closeness | Characters are close almost immediately and intertwined as they sing. | The scene takes more time before intimacy fully arrives. |
| What happens during the song | Holzman describes the characters singing together while closely entwined. | Fiyero visits Elphaba’s home and encounters the world she has made. |
| Emotional emphasis | Closeness arrives early in the staging Holzman describes. | The film emphasizes gradual anticipation and a developing connection. |
Why anticipation matters to the romance
Holzman says, “What’s sexy to me is anticipation, to quote Carly Simon.” Her point is that the delay is part of the scene’s appeal: the audience sees the possibility of intimacy before the characters fully act on it. She also points to Cynthia Erivo’s guarded performance as Elphaba. Elphaba knows what is coming and wants it, but the scene allows that desire to remain subtle while it builds.
The home and costume contribute to that sense of private access. Holzman identifies Elphaba’s cardigan as Paul Tazewell’s costume work and discusses Fiyero seeing her private world. In combination, the setting, the small details of her appearance and Erivo’s restraint make the encounter feel like a gradual crossing into a space Elphaba has made her own.

What the interviews do—and do not—establish
Chu’s separate interview with Cosmopolitan is consistent with this reading: he leaves it to the audience to judge how charged the scene is and describes the duet as developing into a new space. The interviews support a clear creative rationale—movement through Elphaba’s home, character revelation and anticipation—but they do not establish a single correct audience reaction or quantify how intimate the scene feels.
