Gene Simmons said he believed Ace Frehley had made repeated “bad decisions” and suggested there could have been factors beyond a fall. Those were Simmons’s personal remarks, not the medical examiner’s conclusion. Simmons later apologized, saying he was wrong to use the words he did.
What did Gene Simmons say about Ace Frehley?
In an interview with the New York Post, Simmons said Frehley had refused advice to change his lifestyle. The Independent quoted him describing Frehley as “in and out of bad decisions” and saying, “Falling down the stairs — I’m not a doctor — doesn’t kill you. There may have been other issues, and it breaks my heart.” (The Independent, 8 December 2025)
Simmons’s suggestion that there may have been other issues was speculation. It should not be read as an established explanation for Frehley’s death.
What was reported as the cause of death?
The Independent reported that the Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Frehley’s death accidental and attributed it to blunt-force head injuries sustained in a fall. Guitar World likewise reported that an autopsy found blunt-force head injuries from a fall at Frehley’s Morristown home studio. These details are reported by those outlets; the underlying examiner report is not reproduced here. (The Independent; Guitar World)

Frehley, KISS’s founding lead guitarist, died in October 2025 at 74. His death was announced on 17 October. The Independent also reported that the band’s official page had announced on 6 October that his remaining 2025 dates were canceled because of ongoing medical issues, following a tour-manager update on 25 September referring to a “minor fall.” Those earlier updates provide context but do not establish further medical details.
