The contemporaneous estimates differ slightly, so they should be read as separate reports rather than combined into a single total.

Disney’s July 28 announcement described the $444.1 million figure as the film’s global opening. Variety’s July 29 report gave a lower worldwide estimate, with $205 million domestic and $233.3 million international. The Disney announcement and Variety report do not establish a reconciled total for precisely the first two calendar days.
What was the reported budget?
Variety reported that production spending was about $200 million. The Los Angeles Times also cited a roughly $200 million production-cost figure, attributing it to Variety. These are reported estimates, not an audited final budget disclosure in the sources reviewed. Against either opening-weekend global estimate, ticket sales were more than twice that reported production cost.

Variety separately estimated roughly $100 million in promotion spending. That figure is not part of the reported production budget and should not be silently folded into it. The Los Angeles Times report covers the domestic opening and reported production cost; Variety’s figures include both production and promotion estimates.
Does box-office gross mean the studio made a profit?
No. The opening-weekend figures are gross ticket sales, not the amount Disney or Marvel received. The sources do not give the contractual theater splits, the studio’s actual receipts, or a calculation of all costs and revenues. The gap between gross sales and the reported production budget therefore cannot be treated as profit or proof that the studio recouped its costs in two days.

The defensible conclusion is narrower: the reported worldwide opening-weekend gross exceeded the reported production budget. It does not establish recovery of production and promotion costs, let alone net profitability.

On July 28, 2024, Disney called the film’s debut the highest-grossing global opening for an R-rated film at that time. The Los Angeles Times reported that its $205 million domestic opening was the biggest for an R-rated movie domestically at that time, citing Comscore estimates. These are dated record claims, not claims about current all-time rankings. Disney also reported an “A” CinemaScore in its announcement; that is a separate audience-rating measure, not a box-office figure.
Disney’s announcement included director, writer, and producer Shawn Levy’s description of the film as combining comedy and action with a story about an unlikely friendship. That characterization offers context for the release, but it does not explain the financial figures or alter what gross revenue means.
