Billie Joe Armstrong reportedly led a “Fuck Donald Trump” chant during Green Day’s July 4, 2025, performance at Rock Werchter in Belgium. The report establishes that the chant was described, but not that it caused a measurable or broadly documented “crowd uproar.”
What did Green Day chant about Donald Trump?
NME Japan reported the chant and quoted a July 6, 2025, social-media post by Marco Foster (@MarcoFoster_): “Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong led the crowd in a ‘Fuck Donald Trump’ chant at their show last night”. This is wording from a post reproduced by NME Japan, not a direct statement from Armstrong. NME Japan

The report also references Armstrong singing a line from “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the performance. Its account supports reporting the event, but does not by itself establish independent verification of the moment or describe how many people joined in.
When and where did the chant happen?
The reported performance took place on July 4, 2025, at Rock Werchter, a festival in Belgium. NME Japan noted that the date coincided with U.S. President Donald Trump signing the One Big Beautiful Bill. That timing is relevant context, but the report does not establish the legislation as the chant’s sole cause.

“Crowd uproar” is not a reaction the available reporting quantifies. The NME Japan account reports a chant and quotes a post describing Armstrong leading it; it does not provide a measured audience response, polling, or evidence that every attendee supported—or objected to—the chant. The scale of any wider public backlash is likewise not established by that report.

How does this fit Green Day’s history of political performances?
The Rock Werchter moment followed earlier examples of Green Day using performances to comment on U.S. politics. These incidents are useful context, but they do not supply evidence about the response at the 2025 festival.
2016 American Music Awards
The Los Angeles Times reported that Green Day led “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist U.S.A.” at the American Music Awards on November 20, 2016. The newspaper characterized that awards-show audience as not inclined to disagree; that description applies to the 2016 event, not Rock Werchter. Los Angeles Times

2024 New Year’s broadcast
During a televised New Year’s Rockin’ Eve performance, Armstrong changed “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” in “American Idiot” to “I’m not a part of the Maga agenda,” according to The Guardian. March 2025 Melbourne concert
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Armstrong addressed Trump and Elon Musk during Green Day’s March 1, 2025, concert in Melbourne. The article says the crowd cheered after Armstrong asked whether listeners wanted Trump to “shut the f—up,” and reports that he changed a “Jesus of Suburbia” lyric to refer to JD Vance. That account describes a separate concert and should not be treated as evidence of the Rock Werchter audience’s response. San Francisco Chronicle
