Spoilers for late-series reveals: Attack on Titan’s Nine Titans are the Founding, Attack, Colossal, Armored, Female, Beast, Jaw, Cart, and War Hammer. Each has a signature strength, but their abilities are not interchangeable: an inheritor’s traits, circumstances, and access to other powers can change what a Titan can do. This guide explains what each power is known for and where its limits matter.
What are the Nine Titans?
The Nine Titans are inherited powers passed among Subjects of Ymir. Their abilities serve different purposes—ranging from influence over Titans and their subjects to combat, transport, and battlefield construction. The series does not establish a neutral strongest-to-weakest ranking: effectiveness depends on the situation and the inheritor.
Some abilities that seem to overlap arise from special conditions or from a holder’s access to another Titan’s power. They should not be treated as powers every inheritor possesses by default.
What does each Titan do?
| Titan | Signature ability and role | Important qualification | Notable inheritor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Founding | Can exert extraordinary influence over Subjects of Ymir and Titans. | Access to its full power is constrained by inheritance and story-specific conditions; it is not freely available to every inheritor. | Eren Yeager |
| Attack | A combat-capable Titan associated with the series’ memory-related revelations. | The memory mechanism is a late-series revelation; do not confuse it with unrestricted control over time or memories. | Eren Yeager |
| Colossal (also called Colossus) | Its enormous scale and destructive transformation make it a major threat. | The impact of transformation is shown in particular scenes; the series should not be reduced to a fixed blast radius. | Bertolt Hoover; Armin Arlert |
| Armored | Hardened armor provides defense in combat. | Armor is not complete invulnerability, and mobility and tactics vary by situation. | Reiner Braun |
| Female | An adaptable form associated with selective hardening and a scream that can draw Pure Titans. | Drawing Titans is not the same as the Founding Titan’s broad influence over Titans and Subjects of Ymir. | Annie Leonhart |
| Beast | Animal-associated features and a form that can serve different combat roles. | Its appearance and abilities vary substantially by inheritor; one holder’s throwing skill is not a universal Beast power. | Zeke Yeager |
| Jaw | Speed, powerful claws, and a hardened bite make it effective against tough defenses. | Its appearance is not identical across inheritors. | Ymir; Porco Galliard; Falco Grice |
| Cart | Supports sustained operations and can carry equipment, making it useful for transport and battlefield support. | The series’ practical demonstrations do not establish a universal numerical duration for its endurance. | Pieck Finger |
| War Hammer | Shapes hardened Titan material into weapons and structures. | Its remote-control method and the user’s protected location create tactical differences from a straightforward Titan fight. | Lara Tybur; Eren Yeager |
How the Founding Titan’s power is restricted
The Founder’s influence is exceptional, but possession alone does not mean an inheritor can use its full power at will. In the story, Eren’s access is tied to contact with Zeke, a Titan of royal blood. The official Attack on Titan Official Portal’s volume summaries describe this condition as part of the plot. It is a specific access condition, not evidence that all Titan inheritors need royal blood to use their own powers.

Why some powers vary by inheritor
The Nine Titans are not nine identical bodies with fixed, uniform movesets. Some have a recognizable signature—such as the Colossal Titan’s scale or the Armored Titan’s defensive plating—while other traits can be shaped by the holder and circumstances. The Beast Titan is especially variable: animal features differ, and the combat use associated with one inheritor should not be generalized to every Beast.
Likewise, a Titan may appear to use an ability beyond its signature role because of a special condition or access to another power. The Female Titan’s ability to draw Pure Titans, for example, should not be described as the Founder’s broad control. The War Hammer’s material-shaping ability also has a distinctive remote-control tactic that changes where its user is vulnerable.
Is one Titan the strongest?
There is no context-free ranking that captures the Nine Titans’ value. The Founding Titan has extraordinary reach but important access conditions. The Colossal Titan can bring overwhelming scale to a confrontation; the Jaw Titan offers speed and a powerful bite; and the Cart Titan contributes endurance and support. A matchup, the inheritor’s capabilities, and the conditions for using a power all affect the outcome.
