NYT Strands puzzle #170, from Tuesday, August 20, 2024, has the theme clue “I think we’re covered.” Start with the hints below if you want to keep solving; the complete spangram and answer list are farther down behind a spoiler warning.

Gentle hint for Strands #170

Think of things that keep you dry in wet weather, from footwear to outerwear.

Progressive clues

The spangram is eight letters long and starts with R. The six theme answers start with G, G, H, P, S and U, in that order. Their lengths are 7, 8, 4, 6, 7 and 8 letters.

How the puzzle works

Strands is a themed word-search puzzle: trace words through the letter grid, and look for a spangram that captures the theme and stretches between opposite sides of the grid. Finding three qualifying non-theme words of at least four letters earns a hint that reveals letters in a theme answer. For this puzzle, reported qualifying words include ACES, BOAR, CANE, DASH, EARS, GALE, GANG, GATE, GETS, GLEE, GLEN and GOES.
