On July 14, the distributor released the first official still featuring Kesy. The image, described in ComicBook.com’s first-look report, shows Hellboy in a tan trench coat, with a BPRD buckle and his distinctive Right Hand of Doom. Those are details visible in the promotional image, not separate plot revelations.
What is Hellboy: The Crooked Man about?
Set in 1950s rural Appalachia, the film follows Hellboy and rookie paranormal researcher Bobbie Jo Song after they become stranded in a small community haunted by witches. Their investigation leads to the Crooked Man, a local devil connected to Hellboy’s past and sent to collect souls for the devil, according to the regional distributor’s synopsis and credits.

Dark Horse Entertainment’s July 3, 2023 announcement also introduced the project.
Which comic is the film based on?
The film adapts the Hellboy comic story “The Crooked Man,” written by Mignola. Mignola co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Golden, bringing the comics’ creator directly into the adaptation’s writing team. The source story and film share their title; the available announcements establish the connection but do not make a case for ranking the film’s faithfulness against other adaptations. The adaptation was confirmed in Dark Horse Entertainment’s September 14, 2023 announcement.
Who stars in the reboot?
Jack Kesy plays Hellboy. Brian Taylor directed, and the announced supporting cast includes Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Joseph Marcell, Leah McNamara, Hannah Margetson and Martin Bassindale. Character-name spellings can vary across regional listings, so the cast names here are given without assigning roles beyond Kesy’s lead.
Ketchup Entertainment acquired the film’s rights from Millennium Media in September 2023, as reported in the rights and cast announcement linked above.
