On June 5, 2024, a Florence appellate court reconvicted Amanda Knox of slander for accusing Patrick Lumumba of involvement in Meredith Kercher’s 2007 murder. The court imposed a three-year sentence, which contemporaneous reports said she had already served. The ruling was about the accusation against Lumumba—not Kercher’s murder.

Why was Amanda Knox reconvicted of slander?

Knox accused Lumumba, who managed a pub where she had worked, during police questioning in November 2007. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) records that she accused him in interviews on November 6 and later wrote a text for police that day. The Florence appellate court’s June 2024 decision concerned that accusation. The ECHR’s 2019 judgment addressed procedural rights in the investigation and proceedings, including safeguards around interpreter assistance.

The ECHR ruling was relevant to efforts to reopen the slander case, but it did not decide that Knox was factually innocent of slander. A finding about procedural fairness is distinct from a ruling on whether the accusation itself amounted to slander.

Was this a murder conviction?

No. The slander case was separate from the murder case. Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were definitively acquitted of Kercher’s murder in 2015. The 2024 reconviction concerned Knox’s accusation against Lumumba, not responsibility for Kercher’s death.

Did the conviction mean Knox went back to prison?

The Florence court imposed three years, but contemporaneous 2024 reports said Knox had already served that term during her earlier detention. The sentence therefore did not mean she had to return to prison to serve additional time.

What happened after the 2024 ruling?

According to contemporaneous reporting, Italy’s Court of Cassation upheld the slander conviction in January 2025. Those reports likewise described the three-year sentence as already served.

Knox’s legal-updates page says the ECHR agreed in November 2025 to examine a later appeal concerning the remaining conviction. That is Knox’s account of a reported development; it should not be mistaken for a new ECHR judgment or a confirmed finding on the appeal’s merits.
