What has Christine Ha said about her vision?
Speaking to ABC News in 2012, Ha described seeing shadows and compared her sight to looking at a fogged mirror after a hot shower. These are her descriptions from that interview, not a current clinical measurement. ABC News reported her account.
Accounts have used different wording over time. In 2012, the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities said Ha lost some vision in 1999 and was completely blind by 2007. A 2024 Illinois State University profile describes her as almost completely blind. Those dated descriptions do not establish how much vision she has now. What caused her vision loss?
Profiles associate Ha’s vision loss with neuromyelitis optica. The timing is not described consistently: the 2018 Michelin Guide profile gives a 2003 diagnosis, while Illinois State University’s 2024 profile says she was diagnosed in her mid-20s. The sources therefore support the condition’s name, but not one uncontested diagnosis date. MICHELIN Guide; Illinois State University.

How did blindness affect her cooking?
Ha has spoken about having to relearn practical cooking tasks, including cutting vegetables with a knife and working with a stove and oven. In a 2022 interview with Vision Australia, she said, “Reteaching myself how to cook really took a lot of persistence,” and recalled, “There were tears in the kitchen.” A 2024 Illinois State University profile notes that she used adaptive kitchen tools.
