The Met Cloisters is a branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Fort Tryon Park, Upper Manhattan, devoted to medieval European art, architecture, and gardens. Its setting evokes a medieval European retreat, but the museum was not transported intact from Europe: NYC Parks says its building incorporates structures from Europe.
What is The Cloisters?
The museum’s full name is The Met Cloisters. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes it as a place to discover “the art, architecture, and gardens of medieval Europe.” NYC Parks describes the collection as nearly 5,000 medieval works; that is an approximate figure, not a precise inventory count.
The park setting is part of the visit. Fort Tryon Park surrounds the museum in northern Manhattan, giving the destination a distinct contrast with the city streets below. The result can feel as if a medieval European setting has appeared in New York, even though only structures incorporated into the building are described as coming from Europe.
Why visit?
The Cloisters brings together art, architecture, and gardens in one museum visit. Its focus makes it a destination for people interested in medieval Europe, while its location in Fort Tryon Park offers a change of scene from the city’s denser neighborhoods. Rather than treating the building as a European monument transplanted whole, think of it as a museum designed around medieval material and forms in a New York park.

Address and opening hours
The address is 99 Margaret Corbin Drive, New York, NY 10040. The Met currently lists hours as 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. It is closed Wednesday and on Thanksgiving, December 25, and January 1. Check The Met’s visitor page before setting out, since hours and arrangements can change.
Admission
The Met lists general admission at $30 for adults, $22 for seniors, and $17 for students; children 12 and under enter free. Pay-what-you-wish admission is available to eligible New York State residents and students from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, subject to the Met’s eligibility and purchase rules. Getting there by public transit

| A train to 190th Street | Walk about 10 minutes through Fort Tryon Park to the museum. You can instead transfer to the M4 for one stop. |
| A train to 181st Street, then M4 | The Met recommends this route for fully accessible public transit: take the M4 for seven stops. |
The Met notes that weekend track maintenance may affect A train service, so check current MTA notices. For route and access updates, consult The Met’s visitor information.
Accessibility and parking
The approach includes cobblestones, and the Met notes about 60 stairs between the main entrance and admissions desk. A free shuttle is available for visitors who require step-free access; contact the museum or check its visitor information to confirm arrangements before you go. Limited free parking is available around Fort Tryon Park, including near the Margaret Corbin Circle entrance, but spaces are not guaranteed. The Fort Tryon Park Conservancy and the Met provide visitor details.
