Spoilers for all of Paradise Season 1. Xavier Collins leaves the bunker to search for his wife, Teri, after finding evidence that she may have survived outside. His departure breaks the season’s contained murder mystery wide open: the next story must reckon both with what lies beyond Paradise and with the secrets and people Xavier leaves behind.
What happens at the end of Paradise Season 1?
In the finale, Xavier acts on clues that Teri is alive and sets out from the bunker to find her. TIME’s 2025 finale recap describes roughly 25,000 hand-picked people entering the bunker and recounts how a group of scientists was killed earlier after Sinatra feared that news of survivors outside could threaten the community. Xavier’s departure therefore does more than begin a search: it challenges the secrecy that has helped keep Paradise functioning. (TIME’s finale recap)

The show has established Xavier’s interest in planes and his pilot experience, giving the choice a practical basis as well as an emotional one. He is not simply walking away from the bunker; he has a way to pursue the possibility that Teri survived.
Is Teri alive, and why does Xavier leave?
The finale gives Xavier reason to believe Teri may be alive, but his decision to search is not the same as a confirmed reunion. The ending leaves the question open and makes finding her the personal engine of the next chapter. Xavier leaves because the evidence changes what he thinks is possible—and because staying in the bunker would mean accepting its account of the outside world.

What does Xavier leave behind in Paradise?
His children and Robinson
Xavier’s two children remain in the bunker. The finale recap identifies Robinson as the person who will look after them; Krys Marshall’s season-ending interview also discusses Robinson’s position and likely importance going forward. Their care is arranged, but the story does not establish that every risk to them has been resolved. (TIME’s finale recap; Krys Marshall interview with TIME)
A city built on controlled information
The account of the murdered scientists gives Xavier’s departure political weight. If information about survivors beyond Paradise was suppressed because leaders feared its effect on the community, then his search may expose more than the truth about Teri. It could also test the authority of the people who decide what residents are allowed to know.

How does the finale set up Season 2?
The ending opens two connected storylines: Xavier’s search outside, and the consequences inside the bunker of what has been concealed. Hulu’s official Season 2 description says the bunker deals with Season 1’s aftermath as new secrets about the city’s origins emerge. Disney+ likewise says Xavier enters the outside world, where details about Paradise’s beginnings come to light, and describes the second season as directly shaped by the first-season ending. (Hulu’s official Paradise show information; Disney+’s official Paradise guide)
Taken together, those official descriptions confirm that the finale’s outside journey and the bunker’s unsettled origins both carry forward. They do not make every Season 2 revelation part of what the Season 1 finale itself established.

Is Paradise based on a book?
No. Hulu describes Paradise as an original story with its own mythology, rather than an adaptation of a source book. That matters to the ending: the finale’s questions about Teri, the survivors outside, and the city’s origins belong to the series’ unfolding story, not to a book plot viewers need to know in advance.
